Assemble a pre-made gingerbread-house kit at this workshop hosted by Patrick the Gingerbread Man. Participants will learn tips and tricks on how to build and decorate the house from a purchased kit. Order kits and register for the gingerbread class via the Nordic Center website by Oct 31. Kits are $25. Gingerbread houses can be displayed in the Nordic Center's Pepperkakebyen exhibit during November and December. The exhibit opening is on Nov. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Spirit Lake Poetry Series features Kemi Alabi. Their poetry collection Against Heaven (Graywolf, 2022) was chosen by Claudia Rankine as the Academy of American Poets First Book Award winner. Interested readers can pick up their copy ahead of time at Zenith Books, or on the night of the event at Prøve Gallery in downtown Duluth. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for mingling and refreshments, and poetry begins at 7 p.m.

Prøve presents Untethered, an exhibition of paintings and prints by Patricia Canelake. Simple figures and animals, leashed and unleashed, are the focus of her work. Her characteristic style of painting is a "balance between storytelling and the rough elegance of gestural, abstracted forms and bright, bold colors." Canelake lives and works in Knife River, Minnesota, near the North Shore of Lake Superior.
