Duluth Art Institute at the Depot

With limited color palettes and basic techniques, Minnesota artist Susan Hensel creates textile sculptures and mixed media works. Spanning a wide range of sizes, Hensel investigates various forms: folded embroidery, movable vessels, free-standing sculptures, and large-scale wall installations. Each piece celebrates the physics of light and encourages viewers to move through the gallery to witness colors mix, vibrate, and interact. The exhibit opens on Dec. 19 and the Art Night Out Talk & Reception is on Jan. 12.

Artists Carole d’Inverno, Alexa Carson, Robert DeArmond, Karen Keenan and Ray Shelerud will each give a presentation and be available for conversation in the upstairs galleries at the Depot. Light appetizers and a cash bar will be available.

One evening with two celebrations will mark a prolific year of work by Duluth Art Institute member artists and a $10,000 award granted by Spectrum and Ovation TV. The DAI was one of 16 arts nonprofits nationwide honored by Spectrum and Ovation for its focus on justice. After the award ceremony, the Great Hall will open for viewing the Annual Member Show.

This social event at the Duluth Art Institute features hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar while celebrating the close of three summer exhibitions: Keren Kroul’s Atlas of the Mind, Matthew O’Reilly’s Shed Self and Cassandra Quinn’s Birth, Afterbirth, Rebirth: Motherhood in the Time of AI. First Witness Child Advocacy Center presents the Restoring Hope Art Exhibit, an event aimed at raising awareness about child abuse in the region. The exhibit will be hosted at the Depot and is designed to foster a strong and compassionate community by enhancing understanding and responses to this social issue.
