The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra presents Johannes Brahms’ musical throwback to student life as the boisterous sounds of his Academic Festival Overture fill the hall. The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra opens this love-themed concert with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C, a piece that challenged conventions at a time when only men’s compositions were recognized. The program continues with a lively conversation between two pianos and the orchestra in Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. Concluding the concert is Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, Romantic.

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra presents a night of song, opening with the Negro Folk Symphony, composed by William Dawson in 1934. Dawson creates a work that is reminiscent of Dvořák’s New World Symphony, using traditional spirituals sung across the instruments in the orchestra. Then, the Symphony Chorus performs an array of choral showstoppers including Orff’s dramatic O Fortuna and Handel’s timeless Hallelujah chorus.

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra presents works by composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Michael Tippett. Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ most beloved works and serves to set the mood for our main course. Michael Tippett wrote A Child of Our Time between 1939-41. After the Nazi’s “Kristallnacht” (November pogroms) had left a profound impression on Tippett, he decided to write an oratorio in support of oppressed people everywhere. The result was his…

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra presents a tribute to motion picture score composer John Williams. The preformance will include themes from blockbuster favorites like Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Harry Potter and more. The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra presents the music of George Gershwin, William Grant Still and Sergei Rachmaninoff. What do they have in common? They were almost neighbors. All three lived in Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s, working on some of their greatest music. Gershwin compiled his suite from Porgy and Bess there called Catfish Row.
