Storytime: I am on Indigenous Land
Event Navigation
Zenith Bookstore hosts two author events on Sunday, as part of West Duluth’s Winter Out West Festival. The fest is a jam-packed three days filled with a youth talent showcase, vaccination clinic, opening ceremony with the mayor, free movie at The West Theatre, bonfire, smores, vendors, winter walk and more.
Author and educator Dr. Katrina Phillips and visual artist and educator Sam Zimmerman present a story time and signing for their new book, I am on Indigenous Land. This children’s book has simple, lyrical text and panoramic illustrations. It explores “the beauty and resources of thirteen ancestral Indigenous lands and how we all use those lands each day.”
Attendees can learn and ask questions about Ojibwe culture. Books are available for purchase and to be personally autographed after the storytime.
Phillips is a citizen of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She earned her BA and PhD in History from the University of Minnesota, and she teaches Native American history and the history of the American West at Macalester College.
Artist and educator Sam Zimmerman or Zhaawanoogiizhik is a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). Drawing on ancestral connections, Zimmerman continues the Anishinaabe tradition of storytelling, embedding the themes of environmental stewardship and conservation of the North Shore in his studio and public art commissions. He lives in Duluth, Minnesota, and regularly explores the natural beauty of Minnesota’s North Shore. He has several books out including How the Birds Got Their Songs and his most recent, I am on Indigenous Land.
