Stories in Tapestries: The Landscape and Community of Valley Grove Church

Sep 30, 2022, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Event Navigation

The Nordic Center of Duluth hosts this exhibit by Robbie LaFleur, award-winning textile artist working in the Norwegian Billedvev, or woven pictures style.

LaFleur uses brilliant colors and keen observation to capture a rural church, its people, environment and central role in the Scandinavian-American immigrant life.

Throughout the month of the exhibit, the Nordic Center will host numerous events that will introduce visitors more deeply into the art of using narrative textiles in sacred spaces. The events begin with a special open house with an opportunity to meet Robbie LaFleur as she demonstrates tapestry weaving on a loom in the gallery.

On Oct. 1 LaFleur will give a Gallery Talk at 2 p.m. sharing insights into the design process behind tapestry woven textiles.

On Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. Margit Carson Johnson presents “Historic Churches Supported by Community: Valley Grove Preservation Society” The event covers how the society and surrounding community worked together to preserve the church and the landscape, through grant writing, upkeep, restoration and re-use of the church buildings.

LaFleur’s exhibit will remain on display at the Nordic Center through Oct. 29.
