Spring Gardening Extravaganza 2024: Color Your World

St. Louis County and the Duluth Depot present a day of breakout workshops and speakers on the topic of gardening. The event takes place in the Depot’s Great Hall, Depot Theatre and Community Rooms.
This year’s theme is “Color Your World” and will feature presentations focusing on the science and beauty of color in the garden. Adam Swanson, the local artist who created the butterfly mural at the Depot, will share color theory as keynote speaker.
Numerous University of Minnesota Extension faculty and St. Louis County
Master Gardeners, including County Horticulturist Bob Olen and Extension Agriculture Educator Troy Salzer will present a wide variety of gardening topics.
The morning will feature presentations on color and ideas for managing weather extremes. Attendees will learn more about nutritional impacts of color in their
vegetable gardens, as well as discovering how to implement weather-resilient gardening practices that will help them bring their colorful creations to life.
This year’s series of workshops will focus on color in flower gardens and landscapes, and at dinner tables. Attendees will be able to choose from workshops with a wide range of topics including:
Constructing bee houses
Propagating houseplants
Bee-friendly lawns
Growing blueberries
Growing orchids
Growing dahlias
Container gardening
Growing apples
Winter sowing
Pollinator gardens
Gardening with good nutrition in mind
A resource book will be provided to all participants that includes recommended variety lists for northern fruits, vegetables and flowers. The $35 registration fee includes lunch, refreshments and the resource book, as well as the day’s program.
