NYS Community Day and Backpack Drive

Neighborhood Youth Services, a program of the Family Freedom Center, presents its annual Community Day and Backpack Drive.
In 2022, as part of Community Day, the Family Freedom Center gave away more than 1,500 drawstring bags filled with school supplies. It hosted a community picnic at Bayfront Festival Park, where it provided free haircuts and braiding for the youth, 31-day bus cards, food, games and more.
Partners in the event include the Duluth Police Department, the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, the city of Duluth, Duluth Public Schools and local colleges.
This year the goal is to fill more than 2,500 bags with school supplies, offer up to six barbers and hair braiders, and provide more activities during the Community Day and additional support for the students and parents as they prepare for a new school year.
