Mural Dedication and Celebration

A community dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Zenith Bookstore’s new mural, created by Duluth artist Jonathan Thunder. The West Duluth celebration includes hors d’oeuvres and desserts catered by Mid Coast Catering.
Thunder is an award-winning artist with work featured in many state, regional, and national exhibitions, is known for his surreal paintings, digitally animated films, and installations which emphasize personal experience and social commentary. An enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe, he makes his home and studio in Duluth. Thunder is the recipient of a 2020-21 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award for his innovation in painting. Since his first solo exhibit in 2004, he has won awards for his short films in national and international competitions. He has illustrated several children’s books including Bowwow Powwow and Mashkiki Road: The Seven Grandfather Teachings (Minnesota Historical Society Press). He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and studied Visual Effects and Motion Graphics in Minneapolis at the Art Institute International.
Thunder received funding for this project from Zenith Bookstore, the Hennepin Theater Trust and the McKnight Foundation Artists Fellowship.
