This exhibition will feature traditional and contemporary floral and geometric designs from Ojibwe, Sami, and Nordic textile traditions. Ojibwe floral beadwork and regalia from Fond du Lac Reservation members and Swedish-Norwegian inspired paintings of folk dress motifs, embroideries, and tapestries will be presented in an installation to promote the healing power of nature and to celebrate cultural traditions of the North.
Artists include Fond du Lac enrolled members Dr. Lisa Savage, Herb Fineday Jr., Chi-Ma’iingan, Sara Agaton Howes and curator Wendy Savage and Nordic-Sami artists Alison Aune, Laurel Sanders, and Marlene Wisuri.
There are multiple events surrounding this exhibit.
March 17: 7 to 9 p.m. – Opening Reception and Gallery Talk.
April 18: 6 p.m. – UMD Visual Artist Lecture Series by Ulla-Karin Warberg.
April 19: 1:30 to 3 p.m. – Guest Ulla-Karin Warberg, curator at the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, Tulips and Roses – an exposé about Swedish Folk Art and its pattern traditions put into a social, socio-economic, and topographic context.
April 22: 1 to 3 p.m. – Earth Day Celebration for All: Swedish ceiling crowns and paper flowers.
April 23: 1 to 3 p.m. – SunFunday Moss, Sami, and Swedish Bags for Children. Pre-registration is required for this event at nordiccenterduluth.org
The Nordic Center Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from noon until 4 p.m.
