JAM Concert Series: Andy Peterson Quartet and Jam Session
Event Navigation
The Andy Peterson Quartet features longtime members Analise Levesque on piano, Calvin Caron on bass, and Sten Duginski on drums. The APQ is one of the first call jazz groups in the twin ports area and have performed at venues across the state including Jazz Central Studios, Sacred Heart Music Center, and Bent Paddle Brewing along with many others. All former students of UMD, the Quartet has had a number of years playing together and have built an extremely strong chemistry and sense of trust as improvisers, and this shows on the bandstand.
Andy’s playing style is rooted in the tradition of bebop with a modern taste. He makes a point to be creative while simultaneously paying respect to the masters. Andy’s biggest influences are Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, and Joe Lovano, and he plans to move to NYC this coming fall to pursue graduate studies in jazz.
The JAM Concert Series is held during the month of April because April is Jazz Appreciation Month. Concerts are held twice a week at various venues around Duluth. One concert features a small jazz ensemble that will play a 50 min set and then a jam session commences where everyone is invited to play, especially students. The other concert consists of a local high school’s big band, followed by either a collegiate big band or a jazz combo, and then the night concludes with a local professional Big Band.
