Fisher and Marten Conservation in Minnesota
Event Navigation
Michael Joyce, wildlife ecologist at the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Natural Resources Research Institute, presents “Fisher and Marten Conservation in Minnesota” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Lois King Education Center at the Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center.
Fishers are a cryptic forest carnivore in the weasel family native to Minnesota. Fisher populations in Minnesota have declined by 50 percent over the past 20 years. During the same time, fishers have expanded their range into southern Minnesota, including the greater Twin Cities Metro area. Joyce will give an overview of fisher history and status in Minnesota, discuss research aimed at understanding causes of the recent population decline, and highlight ongoing work to better understand fisher population status, distribution and ecology in southern Minnesota.
Joyce has been studying wildlife in northern Minnesota over the past 12 years. His research focuses broadly on wildlife ecology, conservation and management, with an emphasis on understanding the effects of human activities on wildlife populations and communities.
