Introductory class for ages 13 and older teaches all about natural dyes used in Viking textiles based on archeological evidence. Participants will learn to prepare dye baths, mordant fibers, modify colors and identify dye plants. Students will receive eight 25-yard skeins of yarn to dye, enough for them to create a project. This class will also discuss ethical harvesting, ways to modify colors, and sources for further exploration.
Students will go home with about 200 yards of wool in a variety of colors, and the knowledge to dye additional fiber.
Participants will need to bring a waterproof bag to bring their samples home.
