Duluth Explorers Club: “Slow Road to the South Pole”
Event Navigation
Duluthian Dean Einerson will present stories and photos from his recent trip to the South Pole as a member of the United States Antarctic Program’s South Pole Operations Traverse. The ‘SPOT’ traverse follows a 1040 mile route from the Ross Sea coast through the Transantarctic Mountains and onto the polar plateau to re-supply the U.S. station at the South Pole. Dean will share the logistical challenges, extreme conditions, colorful teammates, mind-numbing boredom, and moments of sheer terror encountered while traveling at 6 miles per hour through one of the most remote landscapes on earth.
Splitting his time between Duluth and the extreme latitudes, Dean Einerson has spent the past 13 years organizing and leading expeditions in support of scientific research in Alaska, Antarctica and Greenland. While a student in the UMD Environmental and Outdoor Education Program, Dean developed a passion for working with small teams in remotes settings. Through his 25-year career in outdoor education and remote logistics Dean has found a way to combine his love of adventure travel with meaningful work.
This is a free event with social time at the adjoining Riverside Bar & Grill at 7 p.m. with the presentation beginning at 7:30.
