Celebrate the Night Sky Week: Photography, Storytelling and the Cosmos
Event Navigation
Celebrate the Night Skies Week runs Sept. 12-17 with nationally renowned speakers, star parties and more — all celebrating the dark skies of northern Minnesota and working to increase awareness of the threat of light pollution.
The Photography, Storytelling and the Cosmos event features presentations in the Fitger’s Spirit of the North Theater. There will be informational booths at 6:30 p.m., before the presentations.
Presentation #1: An Ojibwe Perspective on the Night Sky
Images and stories by Travis Novitsky and Carl Gawboy
Presentation #2: Carnival of Animals, Gods and Exotica — The Origin of the Constellations We Use Today
Bob King, aka “Astro Bob” takes the audience on a journey through time and space
Stargazing
After the presentations there will be stargazing on the Fitger’s patio with the Arrowhead Astronomical Society and UMD Planetarium. Telescopes will be provided.
Starry Skies North — a chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association — organizes the week of events to bring awareness to the dimming skies by celebrating an often hidden resource: the night.
