“Catching Up/Resurfacing” Exhibition: A Fusion of Art, Environment and Technology

Joseph Nease Gallery announces the opening of its latest exhibition, “Catching Up/Resurfacing”. This display showcases a diverse array of recent and in-progress artwork by our esteemed local gallery artists, including Tara Austin, David Bowen, Craig Blacklock, Amanda McElray Hunter, Kathy McTavish, Karen Owsley Nease, Joellyn Rock, and Tim White. The emergence of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns paired with powerfully disruptive AI technology has increased the necessity for visual narratives. If for no other reason than to make sense of the budding complexity we find ourselves immersed within, these selected artists communicate pluralistic systems that usually seem to sit just beyond the veil of our day-to-day focus. By exploring the confluence of digital and analog landscapes through relatable, emotionally resonant imagery, we’re offered a path forward. This isn’t a simple feat, and yet each of these artists and their works give us something tangible to grapple with.

Environmentalism has been a driving force in contemporary art, prompting artists to address pressing issues such as climate change, deforestation, and pollution. Likewise, the relationship between humanity and technology is as crucial an aspect of modern artistic expression as is the changing weather. The work in this exhibition treats all of these trends as forgone conclusions. So instead, the focus is on the actual machinery of the new world in which we find ourselves. It is as much an internal exploration as it is an external one, but even more so is it centered upon that greater level of metaphysics we commonly refer to as “Reality”.
