National Bike to School Day
Event Navigation
Congdon Park Elementary School will join schools from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day.
The event will begin at 7 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders biking and walking from their homes to school. Bicyclists and walkers will arrive at the school between 7:10 and 7:45 a.m.
Bike to School Day encourages a nationwide bike-focused celebration for students in May. It builds on the popularity and success of Walk to School Day, celebrated across the country and worldwide each October.
Other special activities associated with the event include the Congdon Park Bike Rodeo on Tuesday, May 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. Congdon students are also being taught about bike safety during gym class using Minnesota Safe Routes to School’s “Walk! Bike! Fun!” curriculum.
Students will receive flashing bike lights donated by SkiHut before the event for safe biking and SuperOne donated donuts for when students arrive at school.
Bike to School Day events raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
The Congdon Park Parent Teacher Association organizes the event. Improvements to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure around Duluth schools is needed.
