Wed, Aug 7, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm | Free | Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center at AICHO

Event Navigation

AICHO’s 2024-25 Waaseyaa Cultural Teaching Series hosts Joe Nayquonabe Sr. (Waabishkibines) who will lead a cultural discussion on Big Drum Teachings. The session will start with a meal.

Waabishkibines, a first speaker of Ojibwe, will share protocols and procedures specific to the ceremonial drums he sits on throughout Indian country. As a lifelong learner, he is looking to support his fellow Anishinaabeg as they seek ceremonial and spiritual support. He sits on 10 Ceremonial Drums throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, holding various positions as a drum keeper, veteran and speaker.

Ceremonial helper Byron Ninham/Niigaanigwaneb will also present. Byron worked for The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe for over 10 years in various youth-serving and educational/administrative capacities and is a passionate student of Ojibwe language and culture. He will also share teachings that were given to him by elders in Mille Lacs and Wisconsin on protocols and procedures specific to ceremonial drums.
