PDD Video Lab: Bluebird Day on the Black Bear Highway

In this edition of the Perfect Duluth Day Video Lab we combine trail camera footage from the Voyageurs Wolf Project, which was previously posted on PDD, with the title track to Duluth band Woodblind‘s 2020 album Bluebird Day.

The original video features a vast array of critters. This trail cam happened to be a spot considered a “black bear highway,” and the happy bears seemed to need some music to dance to.

PDD Video Lab: Ghost Ship Emerges

Dawn LaPointe and Gary Fiedler of Radiant Spirit Gallery captured the Joseph L. Block emerging through the sea smoke like a ghost. The morning temperature was -20°F with a -40°F windchill. The video was processed at an 8x speed.

As is usually the case with the PDD Video Lab, we’ve supplied a soundtrack to the silent video. Press play on the audio file below, then press play on the video file and enjoy the marriage. The track is “Cold” by Duluth band Woodblind.

Wood Blind featuring Teague Alexy — “Working Man’s Song”

“Working Man’s Song” is the B-side to Wood Blind‘s recent 7-inch single release, “Big Voice.” Teague Alexy composed “Working Man’s Song” roughly 15 years ago; it appeared on the Teague Alexy with Medication album Sun, Moon and Heaven. Alexy provides lead vocals on the Wood Blind version, with Jason Wussow on guitar and Veikko Lepisto on upright bass.

Wood Blind’s Veikko Lepisto, back in the day

Duluth band Wood Blind plays Sept. 25 at Beaner’s during the week-long “One Week Live” celebration. We dug into the shallow end of the PDD archives and dusted off this Royal Crown Revue video circa 1997, which features Wood Blind bassist Veikko Lepisto doing his thing with the old crew.

Lepisto was born in Duluth and studied bass with Billy Barnard at UMD. He lived in Los Angeles during most of his music career, but has been back in Duluth for over a year.
