What’s being built kitty-corner from At Sara’s Table, across the street from V.I.P.?

Anyone know?

What to do with extra garage door panels

If you really want to know why I have two extra garage door panels, go ahead and ask. For now, I’ll get to the point. What I find to be really annoying about having two perfectly good garage door panels is that it seems the best thing I can do is haul them to a junk yard and get them out of my way. Tell me if I’m wrong.

Is there anyone who warehouses stuff like this and sells them to contractors or the general public? A new panel costs $220 — that’s $440 for two — but the odds that someone who needs the exact size and color panels I have will search Craigslist and find out I have them for cheap are minimal. So these panels are likely to hit the dump by the time the snow falls, unless I get ambitious and recruit two friends to help me carefully feed them into the rafters so they can waste space up there for 20 years.

50-cent soda pop machines in Duluth

pop-50-cents“One soda … 12 ounces. Fifty sen! Sold. It’s been a pleasure frequenting your establishment.”

–Michael Douglas as William “D-Fens” Foster in the 1993 movie Falling Down

I noticed recently that Twin Ports Cyclery in the West End has a pop machine inside that charges 50 cents, which is the amount that should be forever recognized in the U.S. Constitution as the official price for a can of carbonated water, citric acid and corn syrup.

I’m wondering if there are any other 50-cent soft-drink machines around town. Please note them in the comments.

I know the Last Place on Earth probably still has its 40-cent (or was it 45?) machine, but even at that price it hardly seems worth it to go in there, and the place is shut down right now anyway … or has it reopened again? I can’t keep up. Please consider all questions in this paragraph to be rhetorical.

Oh, and I don’t want to hear about any 55-cent machines. Might as well be a dollar.

Nightly disruptions in Lakeside

Has anyone else living in the Lakeside neighborhood heard the nightly “pows” around 9:30 p.m. for the past week or so? Seems like a few of them go off each night sometime between 9-10 p.m., which has been making my gun-shy dog pretty anxious, barky, etc. Any idea what the noise is or where it’s coming from? It sounds a bit like far-off fireworks, which around July 4 seemed normal, but still going off and at around the same time each evening has me wondering.

Wholesome Album Covers

Does Sexhawk’s release of the Nuts of a Warrior EP do anything to offset the old Ween album art controversy? Or is there not enough flesh?

Car sharing options in Duluth?

I’m back in lovely Duluth for the summer, and am wondering if there are any car sharing options yet. I don’t own one since I work abroad and am only here a couple months each year. I’m getting used to having access to things through collaborative consumption models like Zipcar. Anything here yet?

Casa Motel and Duluth Motel History

In a vein somewhat similar to the Ye Olde Corner Grocery post, I recently saw that the Casa Motel is for sale. That shoebox-looking motel has been a curiosity since I was a kid. It had a certain “stigma” about it, but I’ve always wondered, why there? What made someone build a motel there, in 1965?

Derelict Houses

We’ve got two derelict houses (on one lot) next door. According to our landlord, they are owned by the city. They have some interesting tenants: a flock of pigeons, a family of raccoons and the largest skunk I have ever seen. When that bad boy goes walking past my bedroom window … oof.

We would like to ask the city to raze the buildings and put in community garden space, but I’m really not sure who I should call to get this going. Any ideas?

Does anyone have any info on the Craft Brew Village in September?

On the Bayfront Festival Park website it lists one of the 2013 events as Craft Brew Village, Sept. 20-22. The Hot Air Ballon Festival is also going on at the same time. Just curious if anyone has any more information. That weekend coincides with the official start of Oktoberfest in Munich, so I’m wondering if this maybe is Fitger’s Oktoberfest.

Weekend ice skating during the summer

Does anyone know if there’s any open skating on weekends in the Duluth area during the summer? I work 8-5 during the week so I am unable to get to any open skating unless it’s on the weekends, or in the evenings on weekdays. Thanks!

Superiorites and Pizza Lovers

I’ve asked a few friends and associates about this with unsatisfactory results, so I thought I’d throw it out there for the PDD community to mull over.

In the early 90s (1990-1993), I remember going to a pizza place in Superior, but I can’t remember what it was called. Here’s what I remember about it:

  • It was open late at night.
  • It was kind of grimy and dark inside.
  • It offered a large variety of toppings. For example, I remember getting shrimp and cashews a few times. I think they also offered sauerkraut as a topping.
  • I don’t think it was a chain.

Does anyone remember a restaurant like that?

Curiosity: Mysteries Near Boy Scout Landing

I have a curiosity about the history of our town and the surrounding area, and PDD has been a great source for finding answers and discovering new things. I hope someone can solve these mini mysteries, (at least they’re a mystery to me).

Out by Boy Scout Landing, there is this wedge-shaped foundation, (Search Google Maps for: 46.654688, -92.224903). It looks as if it was some sort of industry long since gone.

Thirties scene in Duluth?

I am wondering where people in their 30s go out for a few drinks in Duluth? I’m not interested in the college scene.

T-Mobile Coverage

I was thinking of switching my cell phone to T-Mobile since it doesn’t require contracts anymore and has some decent prices. How good is the coverage? I would guess coverage is fine in Duluth/Superior, but how good is it as you head toward Ashland?

What is North by North?

Can someone tell me what North by North is?
