Happy seventh birthday to us

Perfect Duluth Day is seven years old today — Tuesday, June 29. Join us for a small degree of antics at Pizza Lucé’s bar around 8:30 p.m.

Tofu raffle * Cocktail consumption * Cliff-dweller camaraderie

Another PDD birthday is upon us

Next Tuesday, June 29, is the 7th anniversary of the first post on Perfect Duluth Day — which is what we call PDD’s birthday.

We’ll be having a little cocktail affair, as usual. This year it will be at Pizza Luce, in the bar. Let’s say 8:30ish.

There will be a tofu raffle, we’ll give away our last two-dozen PDD bumper stickers and … gosh, I don’t know, maybe you should dress up as your Gravatar.

Anyway, mark your calendar or whatever. I’ll remind you again next week.

By the way, trivia fans, PDD shares its birthday with comedian Richard Lewis and actors Gary Busey and Slim Pickens.

Amazing career opportunity that will make someone wealthy and self-actualized

Seriously though, Perfect Duluth Day is indeed looking for a Part-time Media Sales Representative. Apply now to sell 2.5-inch squares.

(Comments to this post are closed to avoid some clown attempting to interview for the position that way.)

Threaded Comments – Aborted

As explained in this post, Perfect Duluth Day experimented with threaded comments for a few days. The benefits of it seemed to be outweighed by the complications of it, so the experiment is now over and comments are back to working like they used to.

Since previously threaded comments are now unthreaded, we hope it won’t create too much confusion to readers who haven’t been following along.

Threaded Comments – This is only a test

Those of you who are regular PDD readers may have noticed that the comments have changed to allow threading — so you can respond directly to one comment rather than having it appear several comments below the one it is relevant to.

PDD administrators turned this function on today to see if it works good or crappy. We might get rid of it right away. We might keep it and tweak it to work better. So try not to fall in love with it or hate it too much.

Sticker? I hardly know her.

PDDsticker

If you’d like a free Perfect Duluth Day sticker, there is a stack on the counter at the Electric Fetus store downtown. Grab one before they’re gone. Merry Christmas.

UPDATE: They’re gone. Read comments for details on alternate methods of getting a sticker.

Last call on the $100 drawing

PDDMarketingWeasel89457Perfect Duluth Day’s readership survey will end at 8 p.m. Tuesday, when the election polls close.

If you haven’t already surrendered your private information in order to be eligable to win the drawing, you have until then. Click here for a chance to win $100 from PDD.

The drawing will be held Wednesday morning, and the winner will be announced in the comments of the original post, which is linked above.

You could win $100! Just feed the PDD marketing weasel by taking a privacy-invading survey.

PDDMarketingWeasel89457Seriously. Perfect Duluth Day is going to give away $100 to one randomly drawn survey participant. Isn’t that awesome enough to make you want to answer a bunch of personal questions without feeling any reservations or contempt?

Good. Then click this link:
SURVEY IS NOW CLOSED.

Why have PDD’s powers-that-be ignored their natural Minnesota Lutheran shame and commenced prodding you to disclose information that is none of their business? Because that’s how the vicious gears of capitalism work, you silly goose.

We all got bills to pay, yo.

This survey will gather information that PDD’s marketing weasel can use to show other marketing weasels how this Web site is an ideal place to advertise certain products and services.

Rest assured, the intentions of this survey are entirely money-grabbing in nature, just as the rationale of participating in it should be. There are no plans to streamline content on PDD, based on survey results, in order to produce a highly targeted product that is perfectly tailored to your distinct demographic. PDD wouldn’t stoop that low. This is just about selling more of those little squares on the right of the page.

Your info won’t be shared with anyone, and you won’t be put on any spam list or further bothered in any way. It is Perfect Duluth Day’s policy to be as upfront and forthright as possible while taking advantage of you.

Thanks, and good luck.

Happy sixth birthday to us

PDD Birthday Party | Monday, June 29

perfectbirthdaycake45

Perfect Duluth Day is turning 6 years old next Monday. Topic for discussion in the comments: Is there any less significant anniversary than the sixth?

Significant or not, we’ve decided to meet for cocktails and whatnot. So join us at Chester Creek Cafe’s Wine Bar next Monday, June 29, from 9 to 10 p.m.

Historical Link Action
First two PDD posts
PDD shows “The Big Lebowski” at Sailboat Park to mark its first b-day
“Happy Birthday” is sung on PDD’s second b-day
PDD turns 3; August turns 7
… and then we took a two-year break from tooting our own horn
… and now TOOT! TOOT!

The ratings experiment is over

For two weeks, Perfect Duluth Day experimented with rating systems for posts (five-star system and thumbs up/down). As you might have already noticed, the ratings have now been removed.

An initial poll showed readers either thought this was a great idea or terrible idea. (The results were pretty evenly split, but slightly leaned in favor of great idea). In practice, however, the ratings didn’t prove useful and interest in them quickly plummeted. In the end, only a handful of people bothered with them.

So now they are gone, perhaps to return another day when a better system can be figured out, or perhaps never to be considered again (except maybe in the comments to this post).

New PDD Feature: Rating Posts

As some of you have already figured out, we added a tool on PDD in which readers can rate how useful or enjoyable they find particular posts.

[UPDATE: Ratings were taken down 15 days after this post went up, so don’t look for them and feel stupid.]

See that row of stars at the bottom of this (and every other) post? That’s where the rating happens. All you have to do is click on the appropriate star to gauge your appreciation. The meaning behind the stars is basically this:

1 star – Lame
2 stars – Somewhat appreciated, but still kind of lame
3 stars – Above average
4 stars – Mint
5 stars – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

A NOTE ABOUT RATING THIS PARTICULAR POST: Rather than rating the quality of this post, please rate the whole idea of having ratings at all, as that will be useful to know. And feel free to comment about it as well.

Blogging Policies Revisited

By the power vested in me by the founders of Perfect Duluth Day, I present this update to PDD’s blogging policies.

Promotional Content

It’s perfectly acceptable to promote and sell things through posts on PDD. Just don’t abuse the power.

If you’re planning a quaint yard sale and want to hype all the Judy Collins records you’re selling, that’s fine. If you represent Wham-o, Inc. and post a rant about the awesomeness of the Pop Bang Target Game, which is available for the amazing low price of $24.99, your post will be removed.

Obviously there is a gray area between those examples, but as long as what you’re posting has local relevance and doesn’t come off like an advertorial, there should be few complaints.

The ol’ Switcheroo

Perfect Duluth Day moved to a different server today. Let us know if you notice any glitches.

Sorry about all the down time this week. Let’s hope that’s all behind us.

Please be seated. Your server will be with you in about five hours.

Surely some of you noticed PDD was down for several hours today. It was the fifth time we’ve had problems with our server in the past two months, so naturally we’ll be taking our business elsewhere very soon.

We hope you won’t take your blogging elsewhere while these difficulties are sorted out.
