Gypsy moth abatement

Nothing will drive viewers to a new blog like gypsy moth abatement!  Did anyone else get the gypsy moth abatement report in the mail yesterday and can anyone explain to me why pheromone treatment is fine for 99 percent of the treatment areas, yet in a small area of East Hillside they’ll be spraying insecticide?!?

Here’s a link to a pdf version they sent.

Greysolon Plaza elevator death in 1979 — fact or urban legend?

A woman I know from my hometown is an alumnus of UMD, and said that while she was in school UMD had the same overcrowding problem that it has now. Instead of housing students at Edgewater, they housed them at the Greysolon Plaza. She also said that there was an elevator accident in which some UMD students were killed. I can’t find this information anywhere online, can anyone confirm that this actually happened?

Trespassing at UMD’s Old Main in 1992

UMDOldMain2

One summer night in 1992, when I was 19 years old, I came home from doing something forgettable and found three of my friends waiting for me. They said I should grab a flashlight and come with them on an adventure.

What’s your favorite Halloween costume?

I’m having trouble deciding what costume to wear this year. Anyone have any suggestions? What’s the best costume you’ve ever seen/dressed in?

Mad Monster Party

Just in time for the Elections Halloween, I stumbled across Mad Monster Party. I’ve seen a lot of Rankin/Bass stuff, but have never even heard of this one. This is a making of, split into two parts.

Halloween banners

If you’ve got fabulous Halloween photos, it’s Halloween banner time. But hurry, ‘cuz I shoulda had this call out a couple weeks ago. We’ll start putting the Halloween banners up as soon as we get enough to rotate.

Halloween banners must follow the same guidelines as the other banners. Basically, the photos have to be cropped to 960 pixels wide by 167 pixels high. The Perfect Duluth Day logo will be added by PDD’s art department.

The winner will be chosen later today — maybe around 3pm … maybe sooner. We’ll see how it goes.

Volunteer Actors Needed For Haunted Ship

Time to start getting together our fabulous group of actors for the Haunted Ship on the William A. Irvin. Ever wanted to scare someone and get thanked for doing so? Ever wanted to leer at someone without having the police called? Now’s your chance!

We’re looking for a solid, responsible, fun crew of actors to staff the ship. The age for volunteers is 18 for safety reasons, but if you’re younger (like 16ish and extremely interested) or if you’ve worked on the boat before, we should be able to work something out.

Help Me Identify This Spider

This spider moved into the overhang outside my kitchen window. I first noticed it this morning, and it’s still there tonight. It’s really hard to get a decent picture, but I did the best I could. Anybody have any idea as to what kind of spider this is, or if they’re usually around here? It’s about as big as the end of my thumb (from the knuckle to the tip). It’s huge. HUUUUUUUUGE. Right now it’s fascinating to watch, but I think I’d have to move if it ever got in.
