Here it is, PDD’s annual gallery of gig posters. It’s not comprehensive, just a smattering of promo images that grabbed attention in 2015.

This Week: holiday madness, ghoul-rock, Ness peaces-out and more

Untitled design
Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:

It’s the week before Christmas, so there’s plenty of holiday-themed stuff mixed in with the usual madness. Nerds somehow find time to talk about something other than Star Wars, singing along with the orchestra is encouraged, Don Ness drops the mic with a big ole bash, kids can skate with Santa and Rudolph, TED at Teatro brings the braininess, Poor old George Bailey fights the forces of heartlessness and greed and the Rose Ensemble plays Sacred Heart Music Center.

Sara Thomsen and pals play a winter concert, Duluth’s holiday-themed escape room still needs escaping, Monster Mob releases an album, Rachael Kilgour throws a holiday shindig, Glensheen lets visitors run wild(-ish) and Jim Hall shows ’em how it’s done.

Selective Focus: Bliss

Tyler Johnson

Tyler Johnson, untitled

Bliss is seldom of an epiphanic nature; it often just slowly suffuses us, when after years or moments prior we’d barely thought it possible that matters could just placidly align. But a surfeit of joy can be just as intolerable as an abundance of grief. Neither can be sustained, and each will evanesce, then quietly, someday, return.

Selective Focus: The Road

Ira Salmela

Sorry, no pithy digressions regarding the philosophical significance of “the road,” because this week I’m on it. Next week’s theme will be “coming home.”

Here’s a bit of what you’ll find on this week’s PDD Calendar:

On Monday, MnDOT is holding a public meeting on the Minnesota State Rail Plan. Get all the trains your brains can take.

Tuesday brings performances from the Brasil Guitar Duo, a little bit of magic at the West Duluth branch library, and the latest installment of Take it with You (which features the fresh-off-Prairie Home Companion Sarah Krueger, who also plays at the Red Herring, this week).

Charlie Parr’s a busy boy — in addition to appearing on the above Take it with You bill, he’s also doing this, this and this.

But perhaps the biggest event of the week is the revamped Christmas City of the North Parade, which will hit parts of Superior Street it hasn’t hit for the first time in over a decade. Add to this the Lake Superior Magazine 35th anniversary open house, the Northern Explorers gear swap and a long list of other events, and you’ve got plenty to tuck into.

This Week: Halloween, plays, gigs and more

This week: soccer, brits, fireworks and sad songs

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

Sure, the World Cup is going on in Brazil, but it’s Sweden vs. U.S.A. right here in Duluth when a bunch of teenagers from our sister city, Växjö, Sweden, play soccer against some of our kids at Stebner Park today through Wednesday.

It’s the season for outdoor concerts. St. Anyway plays at Chester Bowl on Tuesday as part of the Chester Creek Concert series and Hairball plays Bayfront on Thursday.

You can celebrate the July 4th weekend with a British invasion by watching a special screening of the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night at Zinema 2 on Friday and then see American English, a Beatles tribute band, at Big Top Chautauqua on Saturday.

Of course, there’s a big concert and fireworks down at Bayfront on Friday.

How do you deal with a break up? Well, if you’re Rachael Kilgour you sing sad songs and invite people to a concert at the Teatro Zuccone on Saturday.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.

This week: drag shows, brain damage, campfires and frickin’ lasers

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

I bet you’ve been hankering a good ol’ fashioned laser light show synched to classic rock in a planetarium with a fog machine thrown in, haven’t you? Well, you’re in luck! There’s a series of Classic Rock Laser Light Shows at the UMD Planetarium tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday. Tonight kicks off with “Dark Side of the Moon.”

Charlie Parr appears at the Underground on Tuesday in a new series of music and conversation shows called “Song, Interrupted.” It’s like a concert with liner notes.

Pride Festival kicks off Thursday with the Mayor’s Reception at the Depot and runs through Sunday with music, a wedding tent, a parade, a 5K, a drag show, a boat cruise, a train ride, a worship service… and the pride goes on and on and on.

“Who Am I, Again?” is a one-man show about brain damage showing one night only at the Teatro Zuccone on Friday.

Break out the s’mores! Rachael Kilgour, Brothers Burn Mountain, Evergreen Grass Band and others gather around the campfire at Camp Miller for a fundraising concert on Saturday.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know.
