The Christmas City Express on the North Shore Scenic Railroad is an annual train ride and storytelling experience. Trains leave from the Depot on Fridays and Saturdays from Nov. 29 to Dec. 21. Attendees travel up the North Shore to the small village of Knife River and pick out a fresh cut North Shore Christmas Tree. The trees are bailed and loaded onto the train while attendees enjoy live music and the holiday atmosphere at the newly restored Knife River Depot. Once returned to Duluth Depot, helpers load the trees onto attendees' car roofs to bring home.
