This course we will focus on the fundamental building blocks of story by examining “story beats” in both literary classics and by reading flash fiction examples. After examining examples, participants will have a variety of prompts to craft a narrative or come ready with your own idea ready to edit. Students will leave with a piece ready to pitch to the variety of literary magazines, both virtually and in print.

Staci Lola Drouillard presents her new children's book, A Family Tree. Drouillard lives and works in her hometown of Kitchibitobig — Grand Marais. Her first book for adults, Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe, won the Hamlin Garland Prize in Popular History, the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award for nonfiction and was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award.

Through reading examples of each, the group can gain a better understanding of what works, what doesn’t, and why.
