Oktoberfest is a free community event for families. There will be music, kids games, and contests such as stein holding and sauerkraut eating. A raffle and concessions of brats, hot dogs and spätzle (German pasta) will benefit the Lake Nebagamon Volunteer Fire Department. Wearing Oktoberfest apparel is highly encouraged but not required. Start the celebration by joining in the parade at 3 p.m.

Support local children facing life-threatening illnesses at the Northern Lights Foundation's Children's Charity Gala. Guests will enjoy a meal, a brief program and opportunities to support the Northern Lights Foundation in a silent and live auction. This year the foundation is sharing the story of the Vikre Family -- Joel, Emily, Espen and Vidar. Attend the gala to learn more about the hardship they endured while Vidar was fighting for his life.

Duluth Local Initiatives Support Corporation's fall celebration features hors d’oeuvres, conversation and a program. The event is an opportunity to meet and mingle with LISC Duluth Executive Director Sumair Sheikh and other LISC staff, board members and community partners. Admission is free, but limited to 125 guests. Register online and make a donation at givelively.org. A $20 donation will help offset event expenses and support LISC's work. The program begins at 6 p.m.

The Finnish American brass band Ameriikan Poijat (Boys of America) will perform a benefit fundraiser concert for the Finlandia Foundation Northland. The band has traveled widely, with performances in most Midwestern states, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Canada and Finland. The band has released six CD recordings and published some of its performance sheet music. The program will consist of a mixture of concert and dance music.

The annual fundraiser for the Holy Assumption Kisa project, which supports schools and children in Kisa, Tanzana, is a buffet with a variety of lasagnas, including traditional, seafood, vegetarian and sauerkraut. The meal is served with salad and dessert. There will be live music and Tanzanian décor will complement the dinner. Donations will be accepted to support the Kisa mission.
