Duluth Folk School hosts an introduction to the Gudbrandsdal style of rosemaling class. Gudbrandsdal style is characterized by twisting and folding leaves of the acanthus plant, a common design ornament. In class students will learn the basic technique and history of this decorative style. Students will practice the fundamental painting process using oil paint on paper.

Learn to spin wool fiber and make yarn with a spinning wheel. The class covers: – Basic principles of the spinning wheel – Wool characteristics and how to draft wool – Spin a ‘single’ yarn – Wind yarn off on a niddy-noddy – Learn to make a 2-ply yarn (If time permits) Register at duluthfolkschool.com.

This beginner spinning wheel class covers basic principles of the spinning wheel, wool characteristics and how to draft wool, spinning a ‘single’ yarn, wind yarn off on a niddy-noddy and making a 2-ply yarn. Several ounces of fiber will be provided, and participants take home the skein of yarn that they spun during class. Registration is available at duluthfolkschool.com.

In this class, students paint their own acrylic Dala horse. While learning about the history and styles of rosemaling, students will paint one side of the horse in oil paint using either the provided pattern or their own creation.

Duluth Folk School hosts a two day workshop which covers all aspects of spoon carving. Participants will learn splitting and axing, spoon design, carving techniques, knife grips, wood safety and finishing cuts.

Students in this class hollow out a branch, cut a slot in the bottom of the cylinder and snap in a bottom piece. The green wood dries and shrinks around the dry bottom locking it in place. With a tight fitting lid, shrink boxes have traditionally been used to store salt, spices and other valuables. Registration is available at duluthfolkschool.com.
