AdventureDuluth.com?

I was out walking the old DWP railbed south of the tunnel today when I saw a blue bumper sticker for adventureduluth.com stuck on the back of a stop sign. I tried to visit the site, but it no longer exists. Anyone know anything about adventureduluth.com and what it was?

Why is water running out of this pipe?

[This post originally contained a photo embedded from another website which no longer exists.]

I know Chester Creek runs UNDER the armory. Why is water running out of this pipe? Is there a stream of water the third floor too? What is the source of this water?

Tongues Tied: UMD Linguistics Retirement

Michael D. Linn, UMD Linguistics professor and friend, celebrated his retirement this week. Linn is most famous, perhaps, for work in the Linguistic Atlas of our region. Mike is the reason that we know that the unique mix of ethnic communities in the Range produced more than 30 identifiable dialects. Maybe equally importantly, he explained (to me, at least) the ways that labor in the mines was fragmented and weakened when work groups were mixed together of people who did not speak the same language. No common language, no ability to organize unions. [Today, it seems, we are separated by a common language that keeps us from organizing. That’s my opinion, not Mike’s.]

Mike taught intro linguistics, topics in linguistics, and applied linguistics for teachers. I’m sure many teachers in Duluth learned their trade from Mike. He also taught writing. If you have any memories of Mike you’d like to share, comment below.

More info about Mike, including some indication of how he will spend retirement, can be found here

I really like the orchard thing. I’ve always said the food folks were ahead of the game in Duluth They understand a basic truth. I don’t like typing here. I want the box back.

Some guidance for PDD from John Waters

I caught film eccentric John Waters on NPR’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me today. He had some good advice, based on his life and work in Baltimore:

“If you learn to celebrate what everyone else hides about your community, you can have success.”

Keep up the good work, Duluthians!
