Dan Hanger gets the last word
Did anyone else catch Dan Hanger’s feelings on some footwear at the very end of tonight’s (Thursday) Fox 21 newscast?
“I don’t like boots.” … awkward silence … roll end credits.
I only wish I had the video clip.

We are looking for volunteers on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 2 to 5:15 p.m. (or any chunk of time in there!) starting next week and going until December 12 (or May 8 if you want to be with us the whole year!) We need volunteers to spend time with the kids, assist the class instructors and be positive role models.
After a night of Labrador debauchery … gastronomic adventures indescribable. Oh, the consequences of such indulgence!!! She is currently undergoing abdominal surgery for intestinal obstruction. I’m sure she will get her wag back soon, but I am not so sure this will alter her adventurous palatte.
I’m about to start a new beginning millinery class. We’ll start on Monday, September 24 and go for 6 weeks. Class will be from 6-7:30. We’ll begin with felt, millinery felt, which is quite different from felted wool. Think fedora or cowboy hat. That material, but not (necessarily) that shape. Only softer.
This episode of Where in Duluth? might be a little tricky, but I decided to add it because 1) it is on a building that faces a heavily-travelled street, and 2) it also is a perfect example of a building anomaly found in this awesome webcomic: Subnormality.
A recent Duluth East graduate, Michael Jackson, is one of four finalists for a NASCAR-sponsored humanitarian award. He has already generated a $25,000 donation to the Starlight Children’s Foundation by being a finalist; the winner will be able to direct $100,000 to the charity of his or her choice.
This sign is on the entrance to the Green Door Lounge in Beaver Bay. I guess it means that even though the place is going to be closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, it will still be “open” on Mondays and Tuesdays … with the quotation marks maybe indicating that they are “open for suggestions” or something. Maybe that’s how the “new hours” work.
The Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault will be hosting a 40-hour Sexual Assault Advocacy Training in October. PAVSA is seeking kind, responsible and compassionate people who are interested in working with victims of sexual violence.
What a week for nerds! Sept. 11 was the sellout Nerd Nite at Teatro Zuccone.
Nerd Nite, organized by Jer Nilsen, Crystal Pelkey, and Adam Brisk, is nearly a religious ritual for me.
(It helps that Reverend Lee attends nearly every one. If you haven’t read this pastor from United Church of Two Harbors‘s recent column about upcoming constitutional amendments, you haven’t heard what the voice of religious conviction sounds like, when it is committed to the search for truth, rather than its presumption. See here or the Lake County News Chronicle for more.)
Nerd Nite is where I take new Duluthians to find community, to experience people who share their passions and their humor.
The DOY Podcast is a comedy/chitchat/whatever podcast. The very first episode features local raconteurs/comedians/ actors/musicians/television hosts/et ceteras Jody Kujawa, Tony Bennett, and Nathan Carlblom talking, singing, telling jokes, being gross, being vile, and just being. DOY is not recommended for children or people who get all freaked out by dirty stuff.
Please give DOY a shot, if you’ve got some spare time where your ears aren’t booked. It may be just what your drums have been craving. And keep checking back for Episode Two and beyond. The idea is to do at least one of these a month.

I am a volunteer for AutismWalkNorthland. It’s a local grassroots program, dedicated to raising funds for local schools and their ASD programs. Due to some serious health issues for one of the founders, the walk is dangerously short on silent auction items. Since the silent auction traditionally generates a good portion of the walk’s revenue, this is a scary time for them.
The Walk donates 100 percent of its proceeds to the participating schools every year, and is seeking donations. Pretty much everything is accepted — gift cards, crafts, baskets, etc. If you or anyone you know would be interested in donating, please e-mail info @ autismwalknorthland.org. You can also find AutismWalk Northland on Facebook, or at autismwalknorthland.org.
Wildwoods Updates…
I am in need of a little help. I need someone to come to my home and let my golden retriever Ivan out on the days my roommate works. It wouldn’t be every day as my roommate works three days a week and I work a 21-days-on and 21-days-off schedule. Will figure out the money. Ivan is a big part of my daughter’s and my life so any dog haters or someone who doesn’t give a shit need not apply. Cheers all.
