Is this a new thing, or have I just not noticed it before? I just saw on Craigslist they were hiring tour guides. I do already try to avoid the Canal Park/Downtown portion of the Lakewalk in the summer because it’s so crowded, and those doublewide pedal-mobile things are impossible to get around when I’m on a bike, but if I’m going to have to be dodging Segways now, too, well, one more reason to stay off the Lakewalk.
(I wish the business owners the best of luck and yay for tourism dollars and all that. I’m just selfishly grumping about crowds and am wanting my own private Lakewalk.)
Earlier this week, a 162-lb black bear was semi-conscious in the snow at Jay Cooke State Park. After being asked to help, three Wildwoods volunteers (Jason B., Ian A., and Peggy A., who took these pictures), sprang into action, loading up with supplies and rushing to the scene to help park employees rescue the bear.
Kate and I spent the evening at Northland Country Club for the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial fundraising event.

Below, some news and updates from Wildwoods Rehab. As the thaw comes, we experience what I think of as “Spring Training” — not quite the season opener, but boy, it’s getting busy for our volunteers.
At Nerd Nite the hosts showed the Geek Prom poster on the PowerPoint screen and asked the crowd what was being parodied. For a group that doesn’t miss a reference very often, the audience was actually stumped for a few seconds and I swear I heard a few crickets before someone finally muttered “Talk dirty to me?”
Perhaps the creative arrow missed the target market on this one. Maybe the prom committee will stick to Star Wars references from now on and leave Poison out of it.
I used an Interstate lot in downtown Duluth today thinking it would be a nice solution to not having quarters or cash and also not knowing how long my meeting was going to run. As is often the case in Duluth, I was unable to read my spot number and was also unable to read the spot number for the neighboring spot due to snow and ice. So I paid for 2 hours of parking using my license plate number. About five minutes before my two hours was up I called the 866 number listed on the receipt to extend time.
Problem number one encountered is that the receipt listed two lot numbers. On the top portion of the ticket, it says Lot 2561. On the very bottom of the ticket it says “to extend time at location 3110.” When I called the 866 number I was unsure which number was supposed to be entered.
On Thursday, Kate and I went to see Wm Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead (by Renegade Theatre) at Teatro Zuccone.
I just found out about this by reading on the TWOP blog about the show. The character Charles Duluth (played by Reg Rogers) has been in two episodes so far. I wonder how they decided on his last name?
Ten local Community Supported Agriculture farmers gathered at Zeitgeist Arts on March 14 to connect with prospective customers and to promote the growth of the local foods movement.
I found this very sweet and very sad kitten outside of my house in Lincoln Park. Is she yours, or do you know who she belongs to?
Bonus points if you can figure the swatch of land that the heart covers. I’m stumped on the scale there, but at a minimum I’m thinking Proctor and maybe Esko and a township or three.
I am interested in looking into and meeting some writers who are either from the Duluth area originally or still live here. Got any ideas?
