Historic barred owl!

Wildwoods was brought a barred owl yesterday (deceased, unfortunately, likely from a window collision). This owl, when already at least 1 year old, was banded at Hawk Ridge by Dave Evans back in 1998. Based on this, he is at least 16-17 years old, and the third oldest barred owl on record.

Harbor City Rollerdames

The Harbor City Rollerdames double-header was intense, tonight — both games at times much closer than I would have expected.

1st Game: Shipwreckers vs. Mankato Area Derby Girls
Shipwreckers 239 to MAD Girls 170

2nd Game: HCRD Nautikills vs. Sioux Falls Roller Dollz
Nautikills 176 to Sioux Falls 170

Smokers needed

The School of Medicine at UMD is enrolling smokers for a “quit smoking” research study. All participants will receive one-on-one counseling for smoking cessation and will work with staff to set and prepare for a quit day. Effects of stress and appetite are also evaluated and all participants are compensated for their time. For more information please call 218-726-8896.

“It’s Not Only Academic” — Conferences in “Social Inquiry” and in Writing

In the last two weeks, I have been to two conferences, one at UW-Superior featuring entirely student presenters, and one at Lake Superior College. In both cases, it was clear: the university is learning to respond to the community, and the faculty and students are committed to making the community a better place.

Where near Duluth?

Where in Duluth?

I went for a stroll on my lunch break and found PDD t-shirts for sale. Do you know where?

Looking for seasonal minion … or a seasoned minion … not for eating.

We need a seasoned or seasonal minion! Raven & Associates, Inc., a great little promotional products company right here in Duluth, has started ramping up for our summer season earlier than usual and we need help! We are looking for person to act as an assistant to our sales team writing up quotes, ordering product, doing product research, etc.  We are looking for someone with computer skills, charm, and the ability to work in an office environment. This very well could turn into a full-time position going into the fall.

Here’s the basic info on the job: Hourly wage of $10 per hour and with some ability to be flexible on work schedule. Previous experience working in an office (you know, with computers), some background in the arts, and interest in outdoors preferred.

For more info, call Dave at 740-2769 or drop me an e-mail at dave @ goravengo.com. We are now located in a creepy old theater at 319 N. Central Ave.

Winter at Wildwoods

What a strange life–a deer in the garage, a raccoon in the basement, a juvenile crow in the aviary, and a whole flock of pigeons, recovering from a variety of issues, in the basement bathroom and spare room of Wildwoods.

Position Announcement: ARAC Grants Manager

Please consider applying.

Tour Guides Wanted

We’re looking for responsible, reliable, friendly, and outgoing men and women – from students to retirees – to join our staff of tour guides at Superior Public Museums. We offer ~ part-time and limited term, from 4 to 40 hrs/wk, flexible schedules and daytime hours.  Great summer job for all-area students and snowbirds.

Duluth Humans of New York

Somehow I missed that Duluth was mentioned on the popular Facebook Page, Humans of New York. Presently 3.2 million are fans of the page, which inspired a bestselling book of the same name. What can we learn about Duluthians in this post? We’re hardworkers who care about the women in our lives.

Ideology and Ambivalent Ethics and More

I was lucky enough this week to attend the Pervert’s Guide to Ideology at the Zinema2 on Tuesday. It was a frustratingly joyous experience.

Floridian

Peterson Anderson Flowers “had a little visitor come in with an antherium plant … all the way from Florida. We think it may be a Cuban Tree Frog. Thanks to the wonderful people at Wildwoods Rehab Center for taking on a Floridian!” FYI, an odd Duluth moment with Wildlife.

Wolf=Flow

Rarely do I get to wear all three of my hats at the same time: faculty member, board member at a local wildlife non-profit, and board member with the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.  I got to wear two of three while I was with some folks at Zeitgeist yesterday.  I was dropping off some brochures about Wildwoods and met with folks from the Wolf=Flow exhibit.

Porcupine in Need

Via the founders of Wildwoods:

When we first got her yesterday morning, we thought she might die. She was found by the highway, likely hit by a car. Though she had no fractures, this porcupine looked just terrible.
