Elusive U.S. Coast Guard Licensing classes…

Ok..  So I heard that there’s someone in the Twin Ports who teaches classes on the U.S. Coast Guard regs and rules that are needed to successfully pass the U.S. Coast Guard exam for ship captains..

Anyone know whom this elusive somebody might be and how to get a hold of him/her?

thanks

Dylan Days opens in Hibbing on Thursday

The good people of Duluth are celebrating their Dylan connection tonight. Thursday through Sunday bring a variety of arts events to the site of Dylan’s formative years up the road in Hibbing. Read more at the Dylan Days website or at the rolling updates at my MinnesotaBrown.com blog. Yes, I’m an organizer of Dylan Days and yes this is shameless promotion. But we’re proud of our grassroots funtime (including music, literature and visual arts) and I wouldn’t be involved if it weren’t something special.

This year’s Dylan Days includes four authors (including, unfortunately, myself), the world premiere of the winning play from our one-act playwright contest, music from Scarlet Rivera (the violinist from “Hurricane” among other things), the singer/songwriter contest and much more.

Hibbing is 80 short miles from Duluth and if you crash in the backseat of your car this is a highly affordable experience. But rooms are available!

Jammie Thomas has a new lawyer for her June 15 Capital v. Thomas retrial in Duluth. His name is Kiwi Camara.

In this trial, “Capital” means RIAA (say it with me… collusion). Original docs here. P2PNet and Ars Technica had very good coverage in the past, and will probably have reporters in town again.

T-Shirts

Has anyone ever gotten t-shirts printed in Duluth who can give me some prices? (or own a screenprinting company? hint hint) I’m looking to get some made, and want to find out where I can get good prices, since zazzle.com works out to about $21+ per shirt

Probably ~20 T shirts
Not sure if it will be one sided or two sided yet (they’re team shirts, so maybe put a name on the back)
Colored (Green or Orange), unless white is a LOT cheaper.
Probably only around 2 colors for the design

Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Filmmaker/editor now hiring/for hire…

Hello,

My name is Rob and I am moving to Duluth with my wife in July. I will be teaching Comm. and Media related courses at the College of St. Scholastica.

I am co-owner of a small independent production company based in Milwaukee. I have been the director and/or editor of an ongoing queue of productions over the past seven years. We have all of our own shooting and editing equipment, lights, sound, track, green screen, etc. I will be available in June and beyond for commercial and creative media projects on a freelance basis.

If you are a writer or filmmaker and need help editing, shooting, or encoding your work for DVD/Blu-Ray or the Internet, I can help you. I have low, very negotiable rates…I’m interested in meeting new artists in the Twin Ports. I used to live in the area, and know quite a few actors and artists.

Also, I am planning to shoot two feature length independent films this fall and next spring, and this will require a lot of local talent. I am working on a website dedicated to these future endeavors, and I will post the link to that site very soon. In the meantime, I am compiling a list of e-mails and phone numbers into a local call list.

For more information about these upcoming productions, please reply to this post, or write to: [email protected]

  Thanks!

-Rob

Things could be worse

These morels were recently brought to us by Kirk Batrud. He is recovering from chefdom by spending time in the woods. He’s a great guy.

They are so gorgeous!

It’s an emergency! Sound the bugle!

I live within earshot of ALL the noise going on around the airport this week as the 148th Fighter Wing conducts some training exercises.

I’m used to all the military fighters and other planes overhead, and I still enjoy looking up into the sky to see them.

But sometime last night, I groggily woke up to what sounded like bugles playing over a tornado siren. I wasn’t sure if I had been dreaming until just now, when (in a fully awake state) I heard it again – and it was clearly coming from over by the airport. I’d never heard it before last night.

The sound is a constant tornado siren noise, with a few overriding bursts of what sound like bugles playing a melody of 8-12 notes. The whole thing lasts maybe 45 seconds. I’d like to know what that sound signals to the military personnel. Does anyone out there know?

Calling all Treasure Hunters

metal-detector-4002

Does anybody out there own (or know somebody with) a high-quality metal detector?  I lost my wedding ring digging in the garden yesterday (should have removed it, I know…)   I already rented a cheapo one and tried it out but it wasn’t much help (too many false readings).  I’m looking for somebody with a high-end detector and the know-how to discern all the crazy noises it makes.  I’d pay you for your time.
