Styrofoam recycling in Duluth

I have a basement full of pieces of hard Styrofoam blocks in all shapes and sizes that I need to get rid of. I hate the stuff, but cannot bring myself to send it to the landfill, due to environmental concerns. I have six years’ worth of it and it is time to do something so I can reclaim the large area of my basement that is currently overrun by it. Does anyone know of anywhere local that I can bring this stuff where they can recycle or reuse it? I know shipping places take packing peanuts, but several have told me they do not take the larger pieces or blocks that come in the packaging of appliances. I thought I had heard something a few years ago about Lake Superior College having a recycling program for Styrofoam, but I have been unable to find any confirmation of this.

On a related note, I also have several very large pieces of cardboard (about 5’x3′) up for grabs. If anyone wants it let me know and you can pick it up in the Piedmont area.

Electrician needed

‘Tis the season for holiday cheer, large amounts of food, and obviously nasty electrical gremlins to pop up and bite us in the ass at inopportune times. We are currently experiencing a power outage to one part of our house. Whilst trying to locate the problem, we discovered that we still have old knob and tube wiring mixed in with newer wiring, even though everything is tied to a modern breaker. We have been searching high and low for a loose wire somewhere, but now fear that the old knob and tube wiring has finally just fried itself leaving us in the dark. Can anyone in the PDD community recommend a good local electrician with a vast knowledge of the old-school knob- and tube-style wiring?

PDD Gift Guide 2012

For the past few years, the gang at Perfect Duluth Day has pointed out gift options produced by the locals — from durable goods made by the region’s top manufacturers to cute little bags of cookies from the corner bakery. We feature 15 lovely items and encourage the PDD community to add to the ideas in the comments.

Beer Store Recommendation

Does the PDD community have a recommendation as to which liquor store has the best craft beer selection? I went to Cash Wise and while it does have a lot of beer and a big “single” selection for $8.99 a six pack, the variety isn’t that great. Warehouse had some different brews but the prices were outrageous. $3.99 for a Big Eddy Baltic Porter? I live close to Woodland Liquor but the people there actually get annoyed and snippy if you ask them a question about anything above Budweiser or Miller. Who has had the best luck and where?

Spooktacular

We attended the Spooktacular at Glensheen on Saturday. It was awesome. If you’ve not been, Sunday is another chance, and it’s worth every penny. Firedancer performs at 7, 7:30 and 8 p.m.

PS: Firedancer: Who recorded the music you dance to? It’s been a long time since I heard elektro-goth stuff like that.

Found: Connolly’s Tom & Jerry Batter

I found some Connolly’s Tom & Jerry batter in the freezer section of West Duluth Super One today. I thought I should alert you all before the December batter shortage hits.

Ski binding mounting

Let’s say a fella got an incredible deal on some skis and another incredible deal on some bindings (not in Duluth). Does anyone know of a person/place that can mount those? I’ll also check with the local stores, but I’m not sure they are in the business of mounting bindings/skis purchased elsewhere.

Leather

Does any know if there is a craft store that sells leather supplies? I used to get scraps of moose hide from Henry’s in Ely, but since his death the scraps aren’t available anymore.

Web Hosting in Duluth/Superior

Is there a decent local option for web hosting in the Twin Ports?

Politics & Beer in the Twin Ports?

If a guy and some friends wanted to have a few at a local bar and watch the debates, where might they be able to go about doing that? Is this a sports-only-in-the-bars kinda town?

Asian grocery around the Twin Ports?

Is there actually an Asian grocery store (or anything resembling the sort) around the Twin Ports? The selection at Cub, Mount Royal and the two Super One Foods I visited is dismal at best. Perhaps I got too used to having Asian grocery stores within a ten-minute drive while I lived in St. Paul, but I can’t even find Golden Curry in a store around here. Any super-secret store I’m missing?

Prøve opening is special event

Chico Strikes Back

Chico Strikes Back

Tonight Daniel Hansen and Lucas Anderson are having a very special art opening at the Prøve Gallery titled “Master Meme.” Daniel Hansen is a local artist with a disability who explores pop culture, ’80s pixelation, and contemporary issues. Lucas Anderson teaches art locally at Marshall Academy. The show features individual work and art they have created collaboratively. This is the capstone show for the Prøve’s first year, and it’s nothing short of a “must see,” even if only for the spirit in which the work has been generated and generously shared with our community.  Opening is from 7 to 11 p.m.

If you’re at all on the fence, you can see some of Hansen’s digital brilliance on my accompanying review at Ennyman’s Territory.

Google is not returning results on permutations of the search – “Apple orchards near Duluth.” I found one in Moose Lake. Does anyone know of one closer than that? or have favorites?
