Because this video of the marathon automatically starts playing, it appears after the “read more” tag instead of on the home page.

Rawkers top Rollers 4-3 to even Homegrown kickball series

The Friday Rawkers bounced back from last year’s loss to the Saturday Rollers by winning 4-3 in the 20th Homegrown Kickball Classic. The series is tied at 10-10.

The 20th Homegrown Kickball Classic had the sides of the Friday Rawkers and the Saturday Rollers right back where they were two decades ago when the competition started, tied up. Friday mustered a comeback 4-3 win over Saturday to tie the overall series at 10 games apiece. Friday had ripped off three straight wins before losing in 2018, allowing Saturday the bragging rights for a year with a one-game series lead.

Duluth Blogs: How to Collect Baseball Cards

Today, I point to another blog by a Duluthian, this time John Boucha. You can tell because his name is the URL.

Surfin’ Superior 2008

Ten years ago — Dec. 10, 2008 — City Pages profiled Duluth surfer Greg Isaacson.

In 1975, he found himself paddling out onto Lake Superior with a few local fishermen looking at him like he was insane. Isaacson went out in the middle of a storm. He wore the top half of a diving suit, which gave his arms all the flexibility and natural movement of the Michelin Man. This jerry-rigged outfit, combined with the glacial temperatures of the water, allowed him just 20 minutes of water time.

But the first wave he caught was magic.

Grandma’s Marathon 2018 Double: Gorilla’s in the Mist

If you’re a grandma in Duluth …

We missed it in 2015, but here’s a belated clip of Lance Armstrong on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast dropping a reference to Duluth.

Ride Duluth

Minneapolis-based director Brendan Lauer put together this video featuring fat-tire cyclists Alex Rohde, Andy Kienitz and Evan Simula, with narrator Hansi Johnson.

How much tension is there when the game goes 15 innings?

Friends of mine went to watch the Duluth Huskies play in Thunder Bay … at the Duluth Buffalo Wild Wings, where they are given a screen for away games. (Locally, this minor league baseball team plays at Wade Stadium. They can be heard on both AM and FM radio, too.) It’s super-cool to see our minor-league team play on the TV next to the big guys.

A recent outing lasted 15 innings. Read more about that at northwoodsleague.com. Is there a 14th inning stretch? Maybe you love baseball and you can tell me what it’s like?

Golfing in Duluth

From the Enger course Facebook page.

I was talking sports, violence, and masculinity with friends and as we rattled through sports that made me, at least, uncomfortable, I went for the one I know I like — golf. No one gets hurt (football) or damaged (running). Yes, there are stories of obsessive coaches doing immense damage to their charges, but I imagine those coaches would have abused anyway — the sport of golf just normalized the behavior.

Maybe golf is what we need, what I need. Golf may be a good walk, ruined, to some, but I could stand a good walk.
