Photo of Dusty Olson and Scott Jurek in April issue of Runner’s World Magazine!

Not only did Duluth help raise the lovely Olympian runner Kara Goucher for a short time at Duluth East,  but ultramarathoner Scott Jurek calls it his hometown.

As I opened up this month’s issue to the article about Jurek,  I had to giggle with shock at the photo of he and another D-town personality, Dusty Olson!  Go buy the issue today!  And, oh,  start running, too.

Journalistic Integrety at Stake, part 2

Personally, I didn’t care much about the accuracy of Jeff Tweedy quotes in various media, but I believe I’ve found a media issue of the utmost importance to our society.

In the Duluth News Tribune’s report about Superior High School wrestler Nikola Bogojevic winning the state championship in his weight class, this paragraph jumped out at me:

Moments later he grabbed Superior coach Bill Gedde and put him in an airplane spin — made famous by professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper — to celebrate the title.

Since when did Roddy Piper make the airplane spin famous? I remember Mike Rotunda using it as his signature maneuver in the 1980s, but I don’t remember ever seeing Piper do it. I mean, I suppose it happened, but I just don’t associate that move with Piper.

Am I right here?

By the way, congratulations to Bogojevic for his victory, his awesome season, and most of all putting his coach in an airplane spin. That’s epic.

2010 Olympics Medal Count – Real-time

From the Get a Life Department, Winter Olympics update

It’s a drag that Duluthian John Shuster, chieftain of the United States curling squadron, has been having a tough Olympics. What’s really sad, however, is that this is totally ruining some fine American’s rich and fulfilling life.

“The medal drought is over!”

Has anyone found video online of Duluth’s Chad Salmela at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games calling the exciting finish to Sunday’s race? For the first time in 86 years, an American won an Olympic medal in Nordic combined.

There’s a transcript on SportsFeatures.com.

Snow!

I need a new snow shovel. I am much too cheap to purchase a snow blower, but the broken plastic shovel I’ve used for the past couple years is finally toast. My wife came home with a fancy ergonomic one from Sears, but I’m not crazy about the plastic. Is there a place around town to get a nice steel shovel? What’s the best option? I read that a combination of a grain scoop (for deep, powdery snow) and a regular snow shovel is the way to go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for a few decent hockey players …

… aged 35 and up to play in a league on Sunday nights. There are 6 teams, it’s supposed to be a 40 and over league but they’re pretty loose on the rules. I’m on the “6th team” — they put together an emergency team so everyone could play every week, but we need a few warm bodies. I would say the level is intermediate to advanced…. So yeah, call Mars Lakeview at 722-4455 if you need any info. Times are between 6 and 8pm, which is pretty nice.
