Chester Bowl ski lift fixed

People with kids may have been following the progress of the chairlift repair at Chester Bowl this week. Monday night, hydraulic fluid was shooting out of the top motor and the hill was closed. There was some concern about fixing the equipment and getting parts which dated back to 1974 or earlier.

Just in time for winter break, the announcement was made by Thom Storm that the lift has been fixed.

“As of this afternoon, the new chairlift clutch is installed, & the lift will be open again on Dec. 26th at 11am. A huge thank you to the city of Duluth Fleet Services & Park Maintenance staff, and Tom Kasper, for their extra efforts in getting the lift running for Christmas vacation.”

UMD Alumni Hockey at Amsoil Arena

So, about 10 seconds into the UMD Alumni Game at the new Amsoil Arena, a little kid behind me says, “Even I could beat these guys in a race.”

Yeah, the old timers weren’t nearly as quick as they were in their prime, but the sexy assist from Bill Watson on a Norm MacIver goal was awfully impressive and the new Bulldog digs are mighty sweet.

Duluth Ski Report

I think by this weekend everything will be open. Wax ’em up!

Spirit Mountain — about half the runs are open.
Mont du Lac — scheduled to open Saturday, Dec. 11.
Chester Bowl — scheduled to open Saturday, Dec. 11.

The cross-country places must be all groomed and ready, too, ay?

Snowflake Nordic Ski Center
Korkki Nordic Trails
Bagley Nature Area

Last week three of the city trails were groomed and ready — Hartley, Chester Bowl and Piedmont. Can anyone report on Magney/Snively and Lester/Amity?

Minnesota Deer Hunting Opener 2010

I come to you from my tree stand near Cotton. Curious how you Northland hunters do this opening weekend 2010.

I harvested a small buck and have seen a few doe. But otherwise pretty quiet, hence the reason I am posting while I try to pass the time. I know it’s ideal to have snow opening weekend but this weather makes it easy to sit up in this tree longer.

Be safe and good luck!

I know it’s not the Twins but …

At least it’s not the Yankees. I’ve waited 39 years for this. Dad would be proud.

Superior has disc golf in Central Park

A new disc-golf course opened in Superior last week. It’s in Central Park, about one mile east of the UWS campus.

Other courses in the area include:

  • Mont du Lac
  • Miller Creek (by Lake Superior College)
  • St. Scholastica
  • UMD
  • Carlton Disc Golf Sanctuary

Topics for the comments:

  • Mont du Lac and Miller Creek are the best courses, right?
  • Is this a trend with staying power, or will no one be playing in five years?
  • So, what do you think of the new course in Superior?

Randy Moss a Viking again?

ESPN, the NFL Network and Boston Herald are reporting that Randy Moss has been traded by the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings for a third-round pick.

Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen, Pat Williams, Kevin Williams … and now Moss? That’s way too many superstars on one team, isn’t it?

At the very least, it’ll be interesting … if true.

Watching the Twins

Actually, I was kind of serious. We got no cable, and the American League games, all of them, are on TBS. Totally bites. Even the ALCS isn’t available for us Luddites. And, no, there are no options for friends with cable. So, if I am forced to go public with my Twins devotion, my bandwagon hopping on, where do PDDers suggest I go without feeling like I have to buy a beer every inning — though that may be fun on a Friday. Looking for low-key, non-sports bar setting. Possible?

Thome at the Plate

I guess this one is right up there with “Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?” and “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio.”

Minnesota Grouse Hunting

Has anyone been out early-season grouse hunting?  I’m curious how people have been doing.  I have seen decent numbers around Duluth and up the shore.
