Seeking information on late local musician Lew Orsoni

I recently opened up an old binder of burned CDs and came across a much loved recording I had forgotten about attributed to Lew Orsoni. It sounds like a live recording. Wonderful ballad about Lake Superior, among other great tunes. I believe I got it from Lew’s son, who used to bartend at the old Twin Ports Brewing Company (predecessor of Thirty Pagan) 20 years ago. I recall Lew had passed away recently at that time. Just looking for info on the CD, Lew Orsoni’s music, and if others have memories of his performances around here.

Mary Bue – “Bones and the Marrow”

Former Duluthian Mary Bue released “Bones and the Marrow” today, a track that will appear on her forthcoming full-length album The Wildness of Living and Dying. Bue is marking the song release with a livestream on Sunday at 3 p.m. CDT on YouTube and Facebook!

Quoth the artist: “The song is a reflection on the quest for finding love not only in a pandemic, but also in a wild and brutal post-divorce dating jungle. Ultimately it’s a healing journey of the broken heart — to slowly, gingerly allow the light to stream in.”

Cloud Cult – “When You Reach the End”

The new music video from Cloud Cult was made by artist Annabelle Popa. It features sped up footage of handwritten lyrics and accompanying drawings — with band leader Craig Minowa faded into the background.

Ingeborg von Agassiz – “Every Animal Every Child”

Cloud Cult – “Song from Oblivion,” “Victor,” “Back Into My Arms”

From the woods of Wisconsin, Craig Minowa of Cloud Cult performs three songs from the band’s recently released album Metamorphosis. Shot for the Soundcheck podcast on a balmy 30-degree day, the three clips feature Minowa playing in the snow with an acoustic guitar, with the rest of the band on backing tracks.

Japancakes – “Duluth 7.5”

Twenty years ago today — March 21, 2002 — the band Japancakes released its album Belmondo as volume 19 of Darla Records’ ambient Bliss Out series. The album features the track “Duluth 7.5.” Note, however, that the tune gets second-class status among music that references Duluth because the band is from Athens, Ga., and therefore is almost certainly referring to Duluth, Ga.

Chickenbone George holds court

“Chickbone George” Alan Sparhawk of the Black-eyed Snakes encouraged the crowd to “dance against tyranny” Saturday at Duluth Cider during the “Stand with Ukraine” concert. Charlie Parr opened the show.
