Folk singing legend Cheryl Wheeler is coming back to Amazing Grace! Tickets are $20, available for pre-sale at the cafe.
Sunday, Sept. 18, 7 pm
Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe
394 Lake Ave S., Duluth
218-723-0075
From her website:
“You may not be familiar with Cheryl, but you have probably heard her music. She is very respected as a songwriter by her peers, which can be seen by how many of them record her songs. Chery’s songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O’Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Holly Near. If they think she is great, then you owe it to yourself to learn more if you aren’t familiar with her.”
Christine Hoberg, a singer-songwriter with ties to Duluth-Superior, is looking for people to download a song from Spin/PopChips.com and nominate her to perform at the annual South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX. Christine is entering the contest from New York City, her current hometown. If she is the winner of her city then she will go on to compete against the winning artists from Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle (I know, I know, weird how they left the musical hotbed of Duluth off of that list).
The easiest way to do this is to click this link to Facebook and follow the directions, and yes you do (apparently) need to do this via facebook although you can listen to Christine’s music a number of places online her website, http://www.christinehoberg.com/ is a good jumping off place.
As of this writing, Christine is currently in the lead for her New York City. Being her “real” hometown, let’s push her over the top and keep her there.
Tribal Alchemie (a Duluth tribal fusion belly dance troupe) is seeking live musicians to collaborate with in an improvisational dance/music fashion. Email ziolatribal @ gmail.com. This is gonna be fun!!!
Two great bands from the Twin Cities and one from Duluth will be playing at Beaner’s Central on Friday, Sept. 2. Show begins at 8 p.m.; tickets are $5. I’m excited to travel up to see them and hope some Duluth peeps will come out as well. You won’t be disappointed!
My wife and I had an opportunity to attend the Tribute Fest this year. It is a concert to raise money for homeless Minnesota Veterans. The organization it helps is called the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans. It is the first year it was held at Bayfront Park. We had a lot of fun attending, got very sunburnt and gained a few pounds eating vendor food. This is the end result. A handful of 360 images, 20 or so still photos and a 7-minute video clip of the artists. Please consider attending this event next year as all the proceeds go to a great cause. It’s because of the veterans we live in the great country we have.
Al Sparhawk and Mary Bue will both be playing at Lake Ave Cafe this Friday, Sept. 2, at 10 p.m. $5. Mary will open around 10 or 10:30 and Al playing around 11:30 come on down for great drinks and food being served late…deck will be open weather permitting! Come on down and make this a perfect Duluth night (last chance for summer romance).

The Blasphemists are playing Teatro on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5.
The Blasphemists interbreed rock, gutter punk and trashcan blues to form a bombastic, if not occasionally unsettling, musical experience that will make you bob your head and gasp for air. They consist of Adam Sundberg, multi-instrumentalist Joshua Herbert and percussionist Steve Hamlin. Their live shows include smashing glass, clanging trashcans and the occasional John Cage piece.
