Opening Night of Reasons to be Pretty

Opening night of Reasons to Be Pretty is Thursday, June 2, at 8pm. Stick around after the show for the after party in the Zeitgeist lobby featuring food from the Zeitgeist Cafe and music by Mae Martin. Then, stick around for a free Long Form Improv set from the newly formed Long Form Team of Renegade Improv.

And if all that wasn’t enough, opening night is pay what you can! Only have $1? That’s fine! Feel like the show is worth $100? We will totally accept!

But come out and celebrate with us. Whatever you decide to pony up to see Reasons to Be Pretty also gets you free food and music, plus a free late-night improv set. Because we think you are all awesome and we like hanging out with you.

Haley Bonar – WOJB Concert Series at the Park Theater

Sublimely-talented Haley Bonar and her awesome band will be performing Friday, June 3 for the WOJB Concert Series at the Park Theater, 15791 U.S. HWY 63 in Hayward.

She’s about to head out on a nationwide tour starting mid-June with Andrew Bird and Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), so this is your best chance, Duluthians, to catch her live onstage. Hayward’s only about an hour-and-a-half south of you all. Don’t miss it!

Showtime is 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and available at wojb.org or 800-776-3689. They’ll be $20 at the door.

Glensheen will be offering free standard house tours on Friday, May 27 in celebration of the 32nd anniversary of opening to the public. The complimentary community day begins at 9:30 a.m. and the last tour starts at 4 p.m. Tickets can be picked up in the ticket house, located at the base of Glensheen’s parking lot, beginning at 9 a.m.

The standard house tours will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. (Hint: arrive early – a limited number of tickets are available.)

The Life of Riley – Sneak Preview

At long last, 4 Track Films is having a sneak preview of its latest feature length film, The Life of Riley. Come on down to the Zinema on Monday, June 13, and be the first to see the film. The Life of Riley not only shows off the beauty of Duluth and the North Shore, but also features many local (and a few from the Twin Cities) actors, technicians and designers. Also featuring homegrown music from Low, the Black-eyed Snakes, Charlie Parr, Haley Bonar, Mary Bue, the Alrights, the Very People, Cars & Trucks, the Keep Aways, Kathy McTavish, Crew Jones, Equal Xchange and Minnesota-grown Martin Zellar.

This screening will be a fundraiser to help us get a jump start on our festival circuit. $10 suggested donation with Q&A and informal reception afterward.

Birthday Suits and the Low Forms at Lake Avenue Cafe

Birthday Suits are a killer two-piece punk band from the Twin Cities, taking a break from their busy touring schedule to come up north for an exciting evening this Friday at Lake Avenue Cafe. The Low Forms, an up-and-coming Duluth rock group, will open the show. This will be a good one for sure.

2011 Youth Outdoor EXPO

Saturday, May 21, 9am-2pm
Youth ages 7-15 (and parents) are invited to join Hartley Nature Center and the McCabe Duluth Chapter of the Izaak Walton League for this annual free event. Activities include bird banding, birdhouse building, laser hunting simulation, fly tying and casting, and more. Youth receive a free Subway sandwich and Cold Stone ice cream. Participants must pre-register by calling 724-6735.
