Center for Ethics and Public Policy

Director of the Center for Ethics and Public Policy
Shane Courtland, 2001 UMD alum and assistant professor of the Department of Philosophy, has been appointed director of the Center for Ethics and Public Policy. He is a member of the Bio-medical Ethics Committees at St. Luke’s and at SMDC Health System.

The Center’s next event is: Intersections of Racism, Sexism, and Warism, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. (UMD Library Rotunda).

This week: Enger Tower, boxing, theater

It’s a good week for theater with four plays opening around Duluth. On Thursday, The Foreigner opens at the Mainstage Theatre at the Marshall Performing Arts Center on the UMD campus. On Friday, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow opens at the Duluth Playhouse along with the The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the same venue. Audience participation and showing up in RHPS costume is encouraged. If you’re looking for a less raucous affair, the Minnesota Ballet will be performing Dracula for two nights only starting Friday.

Walking Dead

I went to the Zinema 2 last night to watch the Walking Dead.

Zombie Theology, July 2011

Zombie Theology, July 2011

This event was sparked by the Comic Book Guy at DragonPort Games and Comics last year. As I understand it, he contacted the Zinema and co-promoted the event. The house was stuffed to the gills, SRO.

600 Reasons to See Low

Low, the iconic band from Duluth, is performing a rare benefit concert with opener Charlie Parr at Marshall School Auditorium on Friday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. (doors @ 6.30pm).  This concert is presented by Life House, a local nonprofit that helps homeless kids get off the street, and back into a safe environment.

Keep on checking the PDD Calendar and get off your duff and do something!

Haunted Halloween Yard on Grandview Avenue by Chester Park

I’m wondering who would be interested in helping with the event at Tom Grier’s on Halloween night (902 Grandview Ave., Duluth). I realize everyone has a busy schedule, and Halloween falls on a Monday but … Tom and I could really use your help! We have already started setting some things up today and yesterday and want to make this year one to remember.

I had to cut out a huge section about specifics, but he needs actors and techies to help out at the city’s best haunted house!

Thanks to all and please email me directly ASAP if you can, in any way, help out! (mnordin41 @ gmail.com)

Scare on,
Mike Nordin

Art Break

Mondays can be hard, but the Duluth Art Institute is making the start of the work week a little more bearable this October. The organization has teamed up with Zinema 2 theater to offer free lunchtime screenings and discussions on contemporary art. We’ll watch excerpts from the series “Art 21” and guest experts and local artists will be on hand to spice up the dialogue. Don’t miss this great opportunity to inject a little culture into the daily grind! Sessions start at noon and last only one hour so you can make your lunch break your ‘art’ break. For more information, please contact Anne Dugan at 733-7562 or adugan @ duluthartinstitute.org or duluthartinstitute.org.

This Monday (October 10) the theme is ‘Memory’ and will include discussion on featured artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. He makes work that will blow your mind – like this photo he made of the Orinda Movie theater. He opened the exposure for the entire film so the viewer can ‘watch’ a film in a photo. Let’s discuss!

Executive Director’s Going Away Party — Duluth Art Institute

The executive director of the Duluth Art Institute, Samantha Gibb-Roff, is off to the East Coast and she needs one last Duluth party before she leaves! Help us celebrate her nine years at the DAI with food, drink, music and of course, friends.

5:30 p.m., Thursday Oct. 6
Lincoln Center (2229 W. Second St.)

Correct dates for “Resurrection Blues”

There was an incorrect ad in a Duluth Playhouse playbill last month, so local theatergoers may have gotten misinformation about the dates of The College of St. Scholastica’s production of “Resurrection Blues” by Arthur Miller. The dark comedy, directed by Tony Barrett, runs Oct. 14 through 23.

First Thursday Motorcycle Ride

Hey everyone, I don’t have a fancy flyer to post tonight, but we’re getting together at the Co-op tomorrow at 5 for a ride. Usually we take off at 6, but we’re gonna shoot for a little earlier departure to get more daylight. So get out the bike, it’s supposed to be super nice, and soon it will be winter and you will be wishing you had gone on that last ride in October…

This week: Turtles, apples, beer train, and boo at the zoo

My computer is back and better than ever after a brief stint of illness (thanks to Mr. Lundgren for taking the calendar helm for a few days) and I’ll be able to highlight some of the upcoming events this week.

Wednesday, Oct. 5
The Chester Park United Methodist Church will host its annual Roast Beef Dinner which will also feature homemade apple pies.

Thursday, Oct. 6
Trampled by Turtles will take the Clyde Iron Works stage with Charlie Parr opening and Mayor Ness hosting the event with all proceeds going to music programs in Duluth Public Schools. Bayfield’s 50th Annual Apple Festival kicks off today and promises apples, music, apples, art, and more apples.

Friday, Oct. 7
Coyote, a side project of Marc Gartman and Jerree Small, will have its CD release party at Teatro Zuccone with Yester opening.

Saturday, Oct. 8
There will be many Halloween events coming up. To kick it off, Saturday is the first day of Boo at the Zoo at the Lake Superior Zoo. Bring the kids out in their costumed glory to see the animals. After you’ve worn them out, hop on board the Fall Beer Tasting Train, a 2.5-hour ride featuring local breweries and brewpubs.

There are plenty of other events going on in the area this week and I’m adding new ones every day so keep on checking the PDD Calendar and keep on sending me events that you’d like to see included in the calendar.

Give me your Twin Ports Halloween events!

I will post them on HauntedDuluth.com for free! If it’s a major Halloween bash or a tiny haunted garage on Halloween night, I want to add it to my site!

Post your event info as a comment in this post, or email me from the HauntedDuluth.com contact page.

This Week: Bellydancers, singers, nerds, rosemalers and movies in a barn

Since the PDD Calendar editor has come down with a nasty case of computer virus, allow me to take a shot at highlighting a few hot events this week.

Harbor City Rollerdames Blast Minneapolis

I have but one concession to my St. Paul Life (1995-2005) as I live in Duluth for my sixth year: I love Green Mill. Happy Hour apps are $5.99, instead of $5, and the Alamo Nachos is off the list, again, but Green Mill remains a Happy Hour First Choice for me … which explains why, despite that Minneapolis/St. Paul nostalgia, I had a great time tonight rooting for the Harbor City Rollerdames.
