The Duluth Chamber of Commerce gives Vikre Distillery an opportunity to talk about their marketing strategies, Yoga North offers a six-week-long series of classes to beginners to yoga, Author Brian Freeman comes to Duluth to talk about why he sets his books here, the history of the soon-to-be-revived NorShor Theatre is discussed during the latest Zenith City on Tap event and the Scenic St. Louis River Railroad is again chugging away.
Oh, and your friendly neighborhood blog is celebrating its lucky thirteenth, too.
The American Indian Community Housing Organization is accepting submissions for its upcoming cellphone photography exhibition titled Let’s See What You See. The only submission requirements are that the photos be taken with a cellphone and shot in Duluth and relate to Duluth.
To submit send a maximum of two images to letsseewhatyousee @ gmail.com. Submission deadline is July 1. The opening reception will be held July 15.

The United Way kicks of its 21st Day of Caring, the Brothers Burn Mountain play as part of the Chester Creek Concert Series, the latest episode of Take it with You takes place at the Underground, the Superior Public Library is the place to learn about and meet a raptor, Moors & McCumber ushers in the 2016 Bayside Concert Series, Charlie Parr and Kyle Ollah raise money for the 310 Film Project and the comic opera Les Uncomfortables opens.
The Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton and the Whos at the Duluth Playhouse, the 12th annual Chum Rhubarb Festival is the place for rhubarb burritos, the Far West Fest 2016 turns Gary-New Duluth into party central, the Park Point Art Fair returns with art and music and food, Duluth Celebrity Game Night goes down at the Underground and Andrew Kirov tapes the pilot episodes of his talk show Twin Ports Tonight.
In August Zeitgeist Arts Cafe and the Duluth Film Collective are launching a new film series: Midnight Movies at 7. The series will focus on cult classics, genre favorites, and films that are so bad they’re great.
First up in the series is Miami Connection, a 1980s tale of ninjas, rock ‘n’ roll, and taekwondo. The film will screen for one night only: Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m.

There’s a public meeting on the Can of Worms reconstruction plans, people can learn how to use a hand plane at Duluth MakerSpace, the folks behind the upcoming WDSE documentary Lost Superior are looking for stories, the Trans+ support group is holding its biweekly meeting on Tuesday, Teague Alexy plays the first show of the 34th Chester Creek Concert Series and it’s again time for the monthly Minecraft event at the Duluth Public Library.
Wednesday is “no kids allowed” night at World of Wheels Skate Center in Superior, the Duluth Art Institute is saying “thank you” to its members via the annual Art Night Out, Bagley Nature Center is the place to be if you like hiking and/or wildflowers, and it’s Grandma’s Marathon Weekend — which is a great time to get your young whippersnapper involved in racing, or to see a bunch of local and national music acts.
Duluth Singles Night at the Depot
I spent Wednesday night at the Depot.
It was singles night, a weekly event in June. The event included $1 Castle Danger beers and entertainment from DJ Trivia. The event included free tickets to local events from KQDS and some locally owned restaurants and some tickets to Tribute Fest (I won three — anyone want to go? I feel no desire to pay tribute to any of the bands being covered.). The highlight of the event: a package to Las Vegas.
Those who prefer the safe confines of walls and a sturdy roof can check out Kiss or the Beach Boys this summer at Amsoil Arena or David Liebe Hart at the Red Herring Lounge, but ’tis the season for music under canopies or wide open to the elements.
Bayfront Festival Park and Big Top Chautauqua are hosting the usual slew of major acts throughout the summer, along with local music being showcased through smaller concert series, such as the Chester Creek Concert Series and Bayside Sounds at Barker’s Island Pavilion. With multiple shows scheduled every week throughout the summer, it’s hard to choose which ones to make time for. Here’s a look at some 2016 outdoor concert highlights.

The Tweed Museum of Art holds a grand reopening celebration, the fifth-annual Bash for Boobies softball tournament takes place, a film in which Colin Farrell tries to avoid becoming a crustacean opens at the Zinema, guitarist Darin Bergsven performs, the Red Herring Lounge celebrates two years in operation with two nights stuffed full of music, people are encouraged to Take a Kid Fishing this weekend and Big Top Chautauqua celebrates 30 years of existence.
My brother Allen and I are releasing three interrelated novellas set in Duluth, on Kindle. The first one is available now, Menno Zwonk: Amish Outlaw. Here’s the blurb we wrote for it: “A savage dystopian satire featuring Menno Zwonk, a larger-than-life Amish outlaw and big game hunter. Zwonk is locked in perpetual struggle with a closet-zoophiliac vegan animal rights activist, and an underground lesbian separatist organic farm. Meanwhile biotech has run amok and the fate of the world might be decided in Zwonk’s roadhouse restaurant outside Duluth, Minnesota. Ultraviolent, dirty, and hilarious, this book is as much a diabolical foodie novel as it is outrageous action tale.” Not for the faint of heart. Yes this work has been excerpted in the Transistor over many years. Stay tuned for pt 2 “Novelty Theater,” and pt 3 “The Guys Who Never Stop Fighting.” These books are action/adventure-science/fantasy with literary pretensions. It’s Memorial Day, and the annual West Duluth parade is happening (as is the Gary-New Duluth Veterans’ Memorial Ceremony), James Taylor comes to town on Wednesday to do his chilled-out thing, the five-day Duluth-Superior Film Festival gets underway, former Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak stops at Fitger’s to discuss and sign his new book, the play Annapurna opens at the Duluth Playhouse and Neil Young tribute act Tired Eyes is out there jamming the classics.
The 18th annual Arrowhead Arts Awards take place in Grand Marais, Renegade Improv is the place for on-the-spot laffs, local anglers are raising money for ALS, the Duluth and Barker’s Island farmer’s markets are in full effect, Animal Allies holds its Walk for Animals 2016 event and the Underground is the place for Music for All.

It’s Dylan Fest all week long, and there is no shortage of daily Bob-centric stuff to see and hear. There’s an art opening at Red Mug Coffeehouse in Superior, a new volume of the Duluth Does Dylan series of albums is released during a big ole blowout concert and the Blood on the Tracks express is again ready to rock and roll. And that’s just a few of the things that are going down.
In other, non-Dylan news, people can attend an open house on Superior Street reconstruction plans, Zenith City Cabaret is back in action with its monthly show, the Maxi Childs Trio is out there doing its jazzy-pop thing, comedy titan Louie Anderson stops in town to dispense some hilarity, the public is invited to tour a UMD research vessel, Club Saratoga is the place for Saturday jazz and polka juggernaut Chmielewski Funtime Band swings by Cloquet to school fools in how it’s done.
The seventh annual Duluth Superior Film Festival delivers film, music and art to the Twin Ports region June 1-5. In its short history, the festival has presented a distinctively imaginative and diverse lineup of international, American independent and regional films.
To help maintain the merriment, volunteers are needed.

Life House holds its third “Night to Shine” event at Greysolon Ballroom, Minneapolis indie darlings the Honeydogs perform at the Red Herring, Duluth Mayor Emily Larson embarks upon her first Mayor’s Bike Ride, it’s Whiskey Galore at Dubh Linn, “Duluth’s best lake party” is happening at Glensheen Mansion, the kids’ production The Wind in the Willows opens at UWS’ Manion Theater and the Zeitgeist Center for Arts and Community looks to raise funds with a big party.
