Here is a great speech reenactment of Herb Brooks “Miracle on Ice” speech by 4 year old Rizzo.
Those without access to ESPN or FSN, can watch the Twins vs. Tigers online. It’s the biggest game of the year for the Twins, behind the Tigers by 2 games with 5 to play.
This biennial Halloween event normally sells out. I can confirm it is a ghoulish good time, even though I missed the train going back to Duluth and was stuck in Two Harbors for the night. I guess Joe Dirt was a little too drunk to hear the last three “All Aboard” calls. That must have been about the time I was in the basement of the Legion doing shots from the mystery bag for a buck.
Good “On the Road” segment that aired a few weeks ago on KSTP 5 Twin Cites. It was nice to see my friends at the Trestle Inn get some free advertising. I was up there on Grouse opener to have lunch and a couple drinks and was talking to the owners and they have got a lot calls since the airing with people asking, “Where are you? I put you into our GPS and it can’t find you.” Sue says, “OK first turn off the GPS and I will tell you how to get here.” They insist, “But my GPS can’t find you. What is the problem?” She politely says again, “OK if you want me to help you find us just turn off your GPS and I will tell you how to get here.” http://www.trestleinn.com
This year’s fall colors are a bit behind due to warmer than normal weather, but should start to peak in the next few weeks. Typically the peak happens sooner if you go inland from the shore. The colors right on or near the shores of Lake Superior tend to peak a little bit later.
See Minnesota DNR’s Fall Color Finder for more info.

A dud shell fell into a pile of unspent shells, and ka-pow! There were six minor injuries and zero fatalities.
I know. I know. We have heard so much about nothing about this that, who cares? Well this is finally news that seems pretty legit coming from WCCO.
Wonder if Cory Hollenhorst thought Favre would ever actually be a Viking when he doctored up this SI cover as a joke? According to WCCO’s Mark Rosen it seems Favre will be a Viking and the equipment manager already ordered the Purple #4.
Well I guess the good news is we will not throw a 3-yard dump off to the fullback on a 3rd-and-8 with Favre at the helm. Can you say Super Bowl?
While on a hike this afternoon with my dog near Grand Marais I met Erik Simula on a unique canoeing journey. Erik is a Duluth native and he is in the midst of a 1000 mile Minnesota canoe journey spread of the next 3 months. The journey started in Grand Portage on earth day April 22nd and Erik will paddle and portage his way from Grand Portage to Duluth to Grand Rapids to International Falls and back to Grand Portage in time for the 2009 annual rendezvous on August 7th. O’yea….BTW… All in a canoe he made by hand and with his paddling partner dog Kitigan. Click Here for the details of his trip on Erik Simua’s blog. Good Luck Erik!
See a couple more pictures I took during my brief conversation with him on the shores of Lake Superior as he landed on shore to camp due to the poor wind conditions and rough seas for paddling. Hopefully he will be in Duluth within the next week or so!! Here is the url to his web site: http://arrowheadjourney.wordpress.com/
Minnesota has had a long history of firsts for shopping malls. It must be the long, cold winters keeping us on the forefront of the indoor shopping experience. Duluth’s Morgan Park Lake View Store being noted as one of the first indoor malls, Southdale Mall in Edina the first post-war enclosed mall and, of course, the Mall of America the United States’ largest and most visited mall in the world.
The Lake View Store in Morgan Park was built in 1915 and had two levels and a basement. There was a butcher shop, clothing, hardware, furniture, a pharmacy and a department store with groceries, and a general store. The top floor had a bank, dentist office, barber shop, hair salon, hat shop, billiard room and auditorium. The basement had an ice-making plant which made eight tons of ice per day for the mall and for Morgan Park residents and a shoe store. Wiki has more info.

It appears I need to pay $2.95 if I want to read more about the Grand Marais Slaw Dog. WHY?
I understand the rough time print publications are going through these days but $2.95 for one article on Slaw Dogs. Dang – the Slaw Dog probably does not even cost that much.
