Homegrown Band Publicity Photo Showdown: Charlie Parr vs. Tangier 57

With the Homegrown Music Festival coming up, PDD launched a series of polls two months ago, tournament style, to determine which Duluth-area band has the sweetest pic. It has come down to these two:

Charlie Parr (photo by Peter Lee)

Tangier 57 (photo by Patrice Bradley)

Which band has the better publicity photo?

This poll is now closed. The results were:

Tangier 57 – 59.5 percent
Charlie Parr – 40.5 percent

Tangier 57 is now the reigning publicity photo champion, and will carry the title proudly through Homegrown. In future weeks, title defenses will occur randomly as new band photo contenders emerge.

As Jim Carlson was getting food at Tycoons, he heard Tangier "dedicate" its whacked-out 'White Rabbit' to his customers. I ran into him and he beamed, like he knew he had "made it" because Tangier recognized him. I don't think he was listening closely enough to Baci. The reality was completely lost on him. Homegrown moment #14.

We are verclempt on all fronts! White Rabbit was an audible and played without planning (or rehearsal). Seriously, I need to replenish my kung-fu star darts and am tired of waiting in line. All good comedy works as tragedy as long as there are healthy amounts of both irony and serendipity involved. Hopefully a bit of levity surrounding the LPOE issues will help us resolve this for the better of all involved and retain the humanity that makes this a great place to live.

As far as the photo goes, I can truly say we're honored and terrified that somehow us scraggy sweater wearing minstrels, marooned on a rock in the sunset, bubbled up over better looking and more vibrant artists. Thanks to the talented Patrice Bradley of SwimCreative for shooting it -- standing in water up to her hips. Thanks to the voters .. voters for all the photos! We cant wait to see who takes the cake next.

Two of my all-time favorite publicity photos that didn't qualify for this tournament deserve mention here.

Shana David is no longer part of the Duluth music scene, but her photo was top notch.

The Blasphemists are still rawking Duluth, but they've added a member since this photo was shot. (You want to see all of their members, right?)

Then again, maybe T-57 should have been DQed, since there is a new vocalist.
