Best Duluth Internet Provider?

Since Charter just jacked up its rates for cable Internet from $35 to nearly $50/mo., I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good high-speed internet provider that does not require a land-line phone. I need the service at my home for my laptop PC.

If you're only paying $50 to Charter for Internet, you're getting a good deal. If you paid only $35 for a significant amount of time; that's amazing!

I can't believe you've been paying $35 for cable! They must have forgotten to raise your prices, and just found you hiding behind some shelf.
I hate Charter with all of hell's fury, but unfortunatly still use them. Any other ISPs are either more expensive or don't have good speeds in my area.
Personally, I'd try for DSL, as I've found Qwest to be much more tolerable, however, they're more dependent on your location (which is why I can't use them).

Call and tell them if they can't match Qwest's rate of 29.99, you are leaving them. Odds are they will match it. Both Charter and Qwest currently have the same 29.99 deal. You just have to ask for it in the "right" way.

Former Qwest/CenturyLink DSL customer here.

I used to hate Charter until I got Qwest/Customerlink. Now I dream of the day I can go back.

Yes, their customer service sucks. But the connection speed and reliability of the service far outweighs the slight increase in ass-pain that Charter provides.

Besides, just because they say they are increasing their rates does not mean they are truly "Increasing their rates".

Customer retention is important, just call them and tell them you have an offer from another provider. They will make some concessions.

I have Century Link's "faster" DSL plan at $45/month. It has gone down twice in the last 5 years for about 8-10 hours. I've had no problems with customer service or speed. I have run my Roku box, a desktop hard wired to the router and three lap tops with no slow down- which was impossible with the older, slower DSL I had with Qwest.

TimK, AFAIK CenturyLink has not been available here until the merger with Qwest.

Anyhow, it wasn't the 8-10 hour outages that got me, it was the 12-20 minute outages that happened almost daily, sometimes 3-4 times a day. Had new interior wiring, tested and confirmed functional, several different modems, same issue.

We pay $35/month for Internet only with Charter. I've never had a problem with their service, might just be lucky I spose.

My neighborhood got new DSL relays a few years back. Most problems occur between the box on the pole and my house (damn squirrels).

Just curious: What speed is Qwest's $29.99 deal? I'm with Charter and my last speed test was 24.6 Mbps down and 3.2 up.

My high-speed Internet from CenturyLink (formerly Qwest) is $44.99 and tested this morning at 1.3 Mbps down and 0.75 up.

If you are new, you can get a $14.99 deal with a bundle or a $29.99 without. You need to call them every 6 months to finagle their next deal. Otherwise, they can more than double the price in 6 months.

Charter works the same way. I've done it 100 times. I always get the current deal for new customers.

Here is a recent discussion of how to do it.

Customer experience may vary.

I used to have the internet formally know as Qwest, & it was more than terrible. I was paying for 7Mbps, & I know you're not expected to reach what you pay for, but I was getting less than 1Mbps most of the time & it felt like dial up. It was all over the place, always timing out and going down, even with new phone lines. Customer support would say they were working on an known issue and it'd be fixed at such and such a date, and when said date past and nothing changed a week later, it was some other issue. So I switched to what was a lesser evil, Charter, and I'm pretty satisfied, much more reliable and stable, the worse thing I have to deal with is them nagging me bundle their other products, which I have zero interest in.

It is strange though, I have a friend in the cities who had Quest, and it was the polar opposite of my experience, a positive one. So it's a roll of the dice I guess.

Fiber to home, people. I say we activate the Google Fiber Twin Ports Team and figure out what we can do to lure some South Korea style internet to the this city by the bay.

Tip for Charter customers:

When they call trying to sell you additional services (which is about once a month), tell them you pay by the minute on your cell phone and they're costing you money. I found that simply telling them every month that I was happy with just internet only caused them to call again the next month, until I went with the cell phone minute story. It's been a couple months since I've heard from them.
