Z’s Deli

I am hearing that Z’s Deli is going to reopen in the location that was vacated by Jalapeno Express. Anyone else hear that?

Hmmm...

Haven't heard that rumor, but I doubt it would be true.

My understanding is that the reason Z closed down was due to high rent, and I don't think the old Jalapeno Express/Grapevine/Mr Nicks/Burger King location is going to be any cheaper.

There is a sign in the window indicating Z's Deli will indeed be moving into the building.

Someone should make a slideshow of the restaurant signs that have been at that location. I do wish them much success, but, wow.

Another victim... Shlotzky's Deli in the Holiday Mall has been closed for several days. A hand written sign on the door just says closed.

Z's food was bland and mediocre. I can't imagine them doing well at the "location of failure."

The paper confirmed that Z's is indeed returning to Duluth.

Is it really a "location of failure" if the location itself is fine, but issues like rent are actually its downfall? A lot of us Superior workers were happy to drive across the bridge on our lunch hours to eat at Jalapeno Express; so I don't really believe the location itself was bad.

Rae's bringing a good point into the equation...rent.

I've done a little curious nosing around. From what I can gather, street-level storefront you're looking at ballpark figures of $14-15 a square for a prime spot of even say 500 to 1k sq. ft. ... that turns into some pretty serious outlay on top of your labor cost. Unless you own the spot, it's going to be tough making rent.

(You downtown folkses who are in the know might be better able to answer that. Like I said, I was just getting ballpark figures.)

Rent and that end of downtown turning into a ghost town at 5 p.m.

I took a pic of the sign on Dec 3 to send to friends who loved and miss Z's - mainly as fans of their salad bar. I knew some who loved the cheap breakfasts too, although I never tried them. Z's was always a busy place even though they were only open til mid-afternoon.

Hope sooner or later they or something can break the 'jinx' as it is a handy location.

Bummer about Schlotzsky's, as it was there a long time and handy/convienent too, but Pizza Man also offered a cheaper little bit larger pizza for carryout.

According to this old Facebook invite, the Superior Street Z's Deli opened on Jan. 9. (The photo on the invite for some reason shows the old Holiday Center location, but the invite pertains to the new location.)
