Bob Dylan and Paul Simon played a very muddy concert at Bayfront Festival Park on July 3, 1999. For some reason, I decided to wear a new pair of white sneakers. This photo is of my friend Chris’ shoes, but one of mine is creeping in on the bottom.

It was a great concert, and totally worth the destruction of a pair of shoes.

I was at that show. I watched cloudworks from my friend Chris German's lawn at the Slanty Shanty on W. Fourth St.

I was backstage with Paul Simon and Bob Dylan doing EMS. I told Bob Dylan that I was hell of a fan and then I said you too to Paul! Got a good laugh out of both of them. I also offered Bob Dylan my fanny pack saying if you need anything I got it and he said "I am good man."

The paper panned the gig and I wrote a letter to the editor that said if Dylan and Simon played "Mary Had a Little Lamb" it would be a better performance than any other done in the city! Ever!!!

It was wet and foggy, but it created a sort of intimacy, enclosing the park and the crowd and the artists in a way I'll never quite forget.  As for mud, some dirty patchouli stained hippies were splash dancing about when I walked near with Grace, aged about 4 months, the all stopped and said "baby coming through" and it was a very egalitarian joyful event like that for me.  I tell grace about that all the time, and how her first ever concert is one that others would love to see ONCE in their lives.  We go to a lot of shows and she is probably my favorite concert buddy.  Thanks for sharing a cool memory and photo, Paul.

I don't want to be the apologist for every controversial small business in this town but he last thing I wanted to share is that actually Jay, it was a Secret Service Concert, maybe under another name, but same characters at the helm.

Damn, I missed that concert, I was out of town -- to my eternal regret. I did, however, stand on line to buy tickets for some friends beforehand so I could enjoy it somewhat vicariously. Wildgoose, love your story about that being Grace's first rock concert. My kid's first rock concert -- and probably her last -- was Springsteen in Madison, Wis. Cheaper than finding a babysitter to take her with. She complained afterward b/c it was "too loud." Unh unh.

I took my mom to this show, along with one of her friends from work & one of my friends from high school.  It was my 2nd Dylan concert--I'd been to his show at the DECC not terribly long before this one--so for me, it was more about making sure my mom had a good time than anything.  

We were literally as far away from the stage as we could have gotten, back in the corner of the orange plastic fence surrounding the field, with the lake right beside us--but we had a great time perched on the rocks, listening to the music & people-watching & taking in the foggy fireworks at the end.  My mom got a big kick out of all the boaters & kayakers watching the show for free...

I remember I got VIP lanyards for that show because my ex-wife was friends with the daughter of the director of the Decc, so we went with them and got to hang out under the big yellow tent.  We were way back from the action but my feet were dry and they brought us out a whole pallet of beer, vodka, mix, and snacks to munch on during the show.  It was quite nice.

I think this was the best concert I have ever been to in Duluth.  Magical.  But now I'm thinking about it and maybe there are a few more that came close. Best concert ever is such a challenging category.  Similar to my kids asking me which one I like best. I try to change that up, using a different one each time to keep them guessing.
