Post-flood swimming?

Like a lot of you, I’ve got the day off. The weather over the past few days has put swimming back on my to-do list, and I’m itching to toss the kids into the car and get into the water. Has anyone heard from those in the know whether area streams or lakes are safe for swimming? Our go-to spots are Amity Creek, Island Lake, Twin Ponds and Park Point, but we’re always looking to add new spots to that list.

I imagine that the lake-side beaches of Park Point are safe, but does anyone have any first-hand accounts of the temperature? How about temperature at Island Lake?

I swam at Wisconsin Point on Sunday and it was as warm as Lake Superior has ever been. It's still brown and murky from the flood, which doesn't mean it isn't safe, but I'm no water quality expert so I can't vouch for it.

My endorsement of Lake Superior swimming should also be tempered with a warning that the Duluth Fire Department has issued a Condition Red Flag along the Park Point beaches -- not because the water isn't clean, but because the winds are causing a high risk of rip currents. So swimming there is not advised. The flags are at 12th Street Beach, Lafayette Square, and Park Point.

You can check the status of Park Point beaches at parkpointbeach.org. All sites are safe for water contact now but there is a red flag rip-current warning for today.

Does anyone know the status of Pinehuurst in Cloquet? No one answers at the number listed on their wepage.

Anyone have an update on Wisconsin Point? I prefer it over Park Point and would like to make a beach day soon.

Dawn, go out to Wisconsin Point at night and build a bonfire. There is a tremendous amount of driftwood out there.

As for swimming, the murkiness is slowly clearing up. I haven't been out there for a week -- I'll bet you can see almost two feet under water now by now.
