Pop Star Academy

This was spotted on First Street next door to Ace’s on Monday afternoon. Let’s hope they teach kids to sing and dance better than they spell. Which begs the question, do pop stars even need to know how to spell?

Do they even teach spelling anymore? I thought if it wasn't tested for NCLB (No Child Left Behind), children didn't learn it. Aside from spelling, reading and writing also aren't taught anymore because it doesn't "teach to the test" for NCLB.

NCLB = make kids "multiple choice stupid."

I think it should read "Conning soon."

Sometimes this is done as a marketing trick. Spell something incorrectly to get the attention of the casual observer and this will get them to look at the rest of the advertisement. It's pretty shady, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was what is going on here.

Jim Carlson at Last Place on Earth would get his employees to intentionally misspell signs in the window because it would cause people to come into the store and tell him he was doing it wrong. He would also make the radio station pronounce sword as "so-ward" in his ads to do the same. And he included the Chinese word for "banana chicken" in his radio spots just to sound exotic. And flummox the guy who ran the Chinese Garden.

I don't know anything about Pop Star Academy, but at the Music Resource Center we're teaching kids to write, record and perform their own music every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6. For free. Come check it out. Our next show is on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m.

The person doing this is an actual Serbian pop-star. She's a very nice person, and she's really excited about getting started. She's just got a few non-native speaking spelling issues.

Hello Perfect Duluth Day, thank you for free advertising, ha ha! For your info, it is a marketing trick, and apparently it is working!

It's a pretty shady tactic to start deceiving your potential customers from the moment they first hear about you.

I agree with Barrett, it is pretty shady. Not to mention, whenever I see any establishment with poor spelling or grammar, I instantly lose respect for the business. I am much less likely to patronize it then.

Actual Serbian pop-star.

Really, that was intentional?

I wouldn't want to leave my kids with someone who couldn't figure out how to use a spell-checker.

The typo makes you look unprofesional. Your comment that it was on purpose doubles that!

To be fair, we don't know for sure that the comment really came from someone representing Pop Star Academy.

Bad Cat, did you misspell "unprofessional" on purpose as a marketing trick? Or are you a Serbian pop star?

Bad Cat!

Damn! No, it wasn't on purpose. But I'm not representing a business trying to get new clients...

I love love love the creative director for PSA, she has done all of our important family photos and always carries the highest amount of professionalism, class, and thoughtfulness. I am so glad she put together this creative outlet for Duluth, as I know she has a heart of gold and is extremely dynamic. I have seen her photo shoots from Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, England, USA, the Caribbean, etc, and they are incredible. Once you see the talent she has and realize that she put much of it on hold to move to Minnesota to help her family, you will understand what an incredible opportunity Duluth has in store.

This, well intentioned I'm sure, Pop Star Acdemy is OK but the Music Resource Center is all that and more, for free and without the false carrot of "recording in New York!" Seriously, there's people who come from New York to record here ... and then some stay like Marc Gartman did.

The owner of Pop Star Academy is Tatjana Mijic, a/k/a Thayati Tatjana.

Fox 21 News aired a story about her on Sunday night -- 20-Year-Old Serbian Model Opens Downtown Duluth Studio.
