The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council recently approved grant applications totaling $63,075 to be awarded in ARAC Art Project Grants. The funding for these grants is made available by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008, and an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature. The arts organizations funded are as follows:

Art Project Grants Awarded

Poetry Harbor – Duluth ($5,000) Poetry Harbor will use this grant to produce a series of four “Vibe Shows,” poetry/music/performance art shows, at the C.H.U.M. Center in Duluth.

College of St. Scholastica – Duluth ($5,000) The College of St. Scholastica will use this grant to produce a performance of Sister Martina’s “The Highwayman,” an award winning orchestral and choral piece which had its premier in 1941 at the Duluth Armory.

Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program – Grand Rapids ($4,000) The Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program will use this grant to produce a concert featuring violinist and fiddler, Alex DePue, on February 18, 2012.

Spirit Lake Poetry Series – Duluth ($3,400) Spirit Lake Poetry Series will use this grant to produce a series of three outreach poetry readings in International Falls, Grand Rapids and Grand Marais featuring prominent regional poets and host community poets.

Renegade Theater Company – Duluth ($5,000) Renegade Theater Company will use this grant to produce the Northland premiere of the Tony Award winning musical, “Spring Awakening,” in February, 2012.

Arrowhead Chorale – Duluth ($5,000) Arrowhead Chorale will use this grant to produce a combination theatrical and choral presentation called “A Victorian Dinner” at the Depot in December, 2011.

Ressl Dance! – Duluth ($5,000) Ressl Dance! will use this grant to produce “Dances on the Lakewalk,” a performance of site specific dances with original choreography by Minnesota dance artists at Lake Place Park on July 6 and 7, 2012.

Grand Marais Playhouse – Grand Marais ($4,650) Grand Marais Playhouse will use this grant to produce “The Rockin’ Tale of Snow White,” as its annual youth/community play in November, 2011.

Matinee Musicale – Duluth ($2,545) Matinee Musicale will use this grant to present pianist Christopher Taylor in recital and to offer a master class to area musicians with Taylor in March, 2012.

Lyric Opera of the North – Duluth ($5,000) Lyric Opera of the North will use this grant to present “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Gianni Schicchi,” fully staged and with an orchestra of 24 members in October, 2011.

MacRostie Art Center – Grand Rapids ($3,800) MacRostie Art Center will use this grant to produce a series of artist demonstrations and workshops in conjunction with its annual art fair in July, 2012.

Minnesota Discovery Center – Chisholm ($4,770) Minnesota Discovery Center will use this grant to produce a quilt exhibition along with demonstrations and workshops in May, 2012.

Wise Fool Shakespeare – Duluth ($5,000) Wise Fool Shakespeare will use this grant to present William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” in March, 2012.

North Shore Music Association – Grand Marais ($4,910) North Shore Music Association will use this grant to present its Bluegrass Masters Weekend at Lutsen Resort, including workshops, jam sessions and an evening performance with bluegrass artists Tim Stafford and Steve Gulley in November, 2011.
