OOh! Oooh! If domestic isn't your thing, I've also got a sweet deal on a '92 Toyota Tercel, whose amenities include: 272,000 miles on the odometer, 2 or so quarts of oil (as Paul said: you'll need it), and one of the world's only remaining Both stickers! For being a UHEV*, this car gets great gas mileage. A little work might alleviate the tendency to burn oil, but we decided to just buy a new car instead. Looks small but can hold a drum kit and two passengers. $300 or best reasonable offer takes it! email karasu.aneki [at] gmail [dot] com if interested.

"unbelievable price" as in, "I can't believe you're asking that much!" ?

Sorry... sorry.

But, seriously, perhaps the junkyard will give you more than $200?

You failed to mention what fine automobile you upgraded to? Unless it's a Yugo or a Gremlin, I assume I'm safe in using the term upgrade.

The junkyard man only gives $25 to $50 for a car that they actually want. If they don't want it, they'll take it for nothing. I've owned over 20 cars in my life (embarrassing, I know) and I've driven more than a few to their demise. I'm not on a first name basis with the junkyard, but they know my face. Anyway, it's is better for the environment to drive something until it is literally too unsafe to operate than junk it too soon.

Junkyard? Heaven's no. This car is still drivable. It can go as far as five miles before smoke pours out of it.

I'm just getting rid of it so I can put more miles on my Bianchi.

I can't believe you wrote this whole post without using the phrase "rusty but trusty." I guess that's because it's more of a "handyman's special."

My wife had an oldschool '86 Taurus. I think she sold it for about $200 because she couldn't afford insurance one semester when she was in college. It's still the only car either of us has owned that had power seats, sigh.

i believe DIY fits right in with this beauty.

paul isn't known for having good luck with automobiles.

Actually, I'd say I had great luck with this automobile. I bought it in July 2003 for about $1,200. So, to put it into terms of a car payment, it would translate into $12.50 per month.

Sure, I had a few hassles along the way, but nothing worse than the two instances I posted about.

Can I just buy the rust?

So you will travel exclusively by bike? What if you need groceries? Beer? Dispose of a body?

Paul Lundgren

We've got a conversion van that will probably have more miles put on it than the bike, but let me delude myself with spring optimism that the bike will be my primary transportation.

My dad has a homemade basket (built from a dish rack) on his 1970s Schwinn 10-speed that he uses to transport his groceries and beer. He's 77 and rides it every day, even in winter.

It can be done if one is determined enough. We have a guy in our neighborhood who I've seen on several occasions with a case of Busch on his handlebars. And as far as body disposal, you can't beat a conversion van.

Well, someone needs to buy that thing soon because the earth is calling it back home!

I like the dish rack idea. One-handing it with a clinking brown bag is asking for trouble. Also good to avoid wearing too much denim or smoking while bicycling. Cancels out the appearance of virtuous intentions.

Good luck with the Taurus sale... they were so futuristic once. Those oxidizing iron molecules probably came from Minnesota, too.
