I wouldn't say scooped. I just had a somewhat similar notion that was less carefully and more rapidly published.
(I know I wrote "scooped" on the other thread, but I was being facetious. Simply announcing that I think there's some good beer in the Midwest is obviously not a scoop.)
I go to NYC a lot, and considering how many people there are, you'd think there'd be more locally-crafted beers available. The only locally-crafted beers I've noticed are from the Brooklyn Brewery. While we have our share of brewpubs with locally-crafted beers on top, it seems like NYC has more than its share of Irish pubs, not so much brewpubs with locally-crafted beers.
Gustave Axelson has you on a slight technicality, Barrett. Although Spirit Mountain is in Duluth, you have to pass through Proctor to access it by car.
(He could come in from the west end of Skyline in the summer, but that would be through Midway Township, still requiring him to leave Duluth proper.)
Still, "Back in Duluth ..." is a strange choice of transition.
Barrett. This is from the view of a New Yorker. This is fly over country so Spirit Mt would be in the windereness. The Hamptons arent even that sparsley populated.
I have to say, I was just downhill skiing at Spirit, and it has the nicest views of any ski hill anywhere. I love the Timber Cruiser run especially. It kinda does feel like it's not in town...
I don't think Gustave Axelson is a New Yorker. Or if he is, he's a transplant. He lives in Minneapolis. I'm pretty sure he knows from wilderness. He's managing editor for the DNR Conservation Volunteer magazine.
Still, I blame him. Because of this article, distant acquaintances from New York want to come stay at my house and go drink beer.
Michael Tortorello, who also lives/lived in Minneapolis, also writes for the NY Times upon occasion. I doubt they would send someone from NYC to Minny to drink beer.
